WeRide and Renault Group Launch Autonomous Robobus Trial in Spain

On March 10 to 14, 2025, WeRide (Nasdaq: WRD), a leader in autonomous driving technology, alongside Renault Group, will debut their free autonomous Robobus trial in the bustling heart of Barcelona. This initiative not only highlights the readiness of self-driving technology but also aims to promote modern, flexible, and sustainable urban transportation solutions, particularly in European cities striving for carbon neutrality and low-emission zones.

The robotic bus, which operates at a level 4 autonomy, signifies WeRide and Renault’s first foray into the Spanish market. The pilot program follows their previous successful venture, which included a collaborative testing phase during the 2024 Roland-Garros tennis tournament. According to Tony Han, founder and CEO of WeRide, this trial plays a significant role in the company's international expansion strategy, showcasing their technological prowess beyond Asian markets and into the European nexus of innovation.

"By allowing our Robobus to navigate the complex urban landscape of Barcelona under real traffic conditions, we're demonstrating not just our technological maturity but also the adaptability of our solutions across various global contexts," Han remarked.

The shuttle service is designed for the public, operating on a circular route of over 2 kilometers with four designated stops for passengers to conveniently board and alight, from 11:00 AM to 5:00 PM daily. Each stop is strategically placed to provide users with the opportunity to experience autonomous driving safely and seamlessly in a real-world environment.

The project is licensed by both the Barcelona City Council and the Directorate-General for Traffic, ensuring the operation meets local regulations and standards. The aim is to engage the public, providing an opportunity for citizens to witness the future of transportation firsthand, while enjoying a scenic journey through the vibrant city.

This deployment follows WeRide's earlier announcements regarding the first fully autonomous commercial service in Europe, conducted in collaboration with beti, Renault Group, and Macif, which targets a similar level of automated public transport in the French region of Dôme. Back in January, WeRide had also revealed a commercial autonomous transport project at Zurich Airport, further solidifying their commitment to reshaping urban mobility in Europe.

As cities worldwide grapple with the challenge of reducing carbon emissions and managing increasing urban populations, the introduction of autonomous vehicles like the Robobus represents a significant shift toward more sustainable modes of transportation. Passengers are encouraged to discover this innovative transportation method over a five-day period, experiencing a dependable and efficient travel solution that reflects the future of urban mobility.

In conclusion, WeRide and Renault Group's trial in Barcelona is more than just a technological showcase; it is a glimpse into the future of public transport, where smart, sustainable, and efficient mobility solutions are within reach. As urban areas continue to evolve, initiatives like this will be crucial in creating integrated transportation ecosystems that benefit citizens globally.
