UCB's Inaugural Myasthenia Gravis Scholarship Awarded to 15 Individuals

Living with myasthenia gravis, a chronic autoimmune disorder that weakens the body's muscles, can pose significant challenges not only for those diagnosed but also for their caregivers. Recognizing these hurdles, the UCB Myasthenia Gravis Scholarship is tailored to help recipients overcome financial barriers as they pursue their educational goals, whether that involves completing high school, enrolling in undergraduate or graduate programs, or obtaining certifications in specialized fields.

Among this year's scholarship winners are a diverse array of passionate advocates, several of whom either live with MG or provide care for family members affected by this condition. Notably, one third of the scholarship recipients are high school seniors, while the remainder are preparing to continue their education at the undergraduate or graduate level.

Kim Moran, UCB's Senior Vice President and Head of U.S. Rare Diseases, expressed gratitude for the breadth of the applications received. “We are truly honored to have received such outstanding submissions from across the nation. UCB is deeply inspired by the incredible stories of not only the 15 recipients but also all the applicants. We are dedicated to taking meaningful action to address their unmet needs.” Moran further announced that UCB intends to continue funding the scholarship into 2026, ensuring that support remains available for the community.

One of the scholarship recipients, Katy M. from Batesville, Indiana, shared her personal challenges, stating, “Financially, I face significant challenges as I juggle the costs of school, living expenses, and medical treatments. With this assistance, I can continue to pursue my dream of becoming a nurse and use my experiences to inspire and support others.” This sentiment captures the essence of why such scholarships are vital—they empower individuals to continue their education despite the obstacles posed by their health conditions.

The selection committee for the UCB Myasthenia Gravis Scholarship consisted of individuals who are directly impacted by MG as well as healthcare professionals with expertise in neuromuscular diseases. Their deep understanding of the illness and the personal stories shared during the nomination process showcased the resilience and strength of each applicant. Dr. Leila Darki from the University of Southern California, who served on the committee, remarked, “Serving on the UCB Scholarship Committee was a profoundly emotional experience.
