NSK Submits Commitment Letter for SBT Certification to Tackle Climate Change

NSK's Commitment to Science-Based Targets Initiative

As the climate crisis becomes more urgent, NSK Ltd. has pledged serious commitment toward sustainable practices by submitting a commitment letter to the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi). Based in Shinagawa, Tokyo, NSK has set ambitious goals for reducing greenhouse gas emissions, particularly CO₂, aiming for certification of their Science Based Targets (SBT).

Understanding the SBT Initiative

The SBTi is a global initiative co-managed by notable organizations including CDP, UN Global Compact, WRI, and WWF. The initiative evaluates whether corporate greenhouse gas reduction targets are based on scientific evidence and aligned with the goals set by the Paris Agreement. By participating in this initiative, NSK is not only affirming its dedication to sustainability but also seeking independent validation of its carbon reduction strategies.

NSK's Sustainability Goals and Strategy

NSK has identified carbon neutrality as a pivotal management objective, targeting the achievement of net-zero CO₂ emissions for Scope 1 and Scope 2 by 2035. Furthermore, they are committed to reducing emissions throughout their entire product lifecycle, which includes Scope 3 emissions. This comprehensive approach aims to utilize their core technologies, particularly tribology, to enhance energy efficiency during manufacturing processes. By innovatively improving fuel and electricity usage efficiency and leveraging renewable energy sources, NSK seeks to drastically cut CO₂ emissions.

Transparent Carbon Footprint Reporting

This summer, NSK took a pioneering step by releasing the Carbon Footprint (CFP) assessment report for their bearings and ball screws. This disclosure clarifies the conditions under which lifecycle CO₂ emissions are calculated and enhances transparency and credibility in their carbon reduction efforts. By publishing such detailed information, NSK demonstrates its commitment to accountability in its sustainability initiatives.

Future Commitments and Plans

With the commitment established, NSK now plans to obtain SBT certification within two years. They will also develop a greenhouse gas reduction plan based on the SBTi’s framework, continuing to build on their carbon neutrality policy. NSK aims to generate societal value through its engagement with environmental challenges and contribute to business growth in alignment with a carbon-neutral society.
