Okayama University Welcomes UN Youth Representative
On May 26, 2025, Okayama University, located in Okayama City, Japan, hosted Iran Unberga, a key representative of the United Nations' SDG4 high-level steering committee. This significant meeting aimed to strengthen partnerships focused on educational initiatives that promote global youth engagement.
Iran Unberga, known for his impactful work representing youth globally, shared the platform with Sophia Bermudez, a UNESCO chair youth ambassador at the university. This visit came after their previous encounter at the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in 2022, where they presented the "Youth Declaration on Transforming Education" to UN Secretary-General António Guterres during the Transforming Education Summit.
During the visit, Unberga and Bermudez outlined the objectives of Okayama University's UNESCO initiatives, which aim to create collaborative frameworks between the university and UNESCO's youth network. They discussed ways to foster intergenerational solidarity that promotes the well-being of people and the planet, emphasizing the importance of transformative actions.
Notably, the meeting aligned with the upcoming Global RCE Conference organized by the United Nations University (UNU), celebrating the 20th anniversary of Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) in Okayama this October. This conference aims to generate greater synergy and social impact through educational practices that adhere to the principles of SDG4.
