The 16th Spportunity Writer Awards: Celebrating Excellence in Sports Writing
On October 29, 2025, Spportunity Inc., a sports-focused crowdfunding platform based in Chuo City, Tokyo, held its 16th Writer Awards, showcasing the exceptional contributions of sports writers who collaborate with the Spportunity column. This quarterly event recognizes the efforts of writers who shed light on underappreciated sports and athletes, aligning with Spportunity's mission to transform societal perceptions and highlight inspiring stories in the world of sports.
What is the Spportunity Column?
At the heart of Spportunity’s initiatives is the Spportunity column, a unique media outlet aimed at changing the narrative around lesser-known sports, teams, athletes, and fans. The organization firmly believes that there are countless inspiring stories waiting to be told, especially from athletes and teams who often do not receive the recognition they deserve. The column publishes around 20 articles monthly, focusing on various sports, thereby amplifying voices that contribute to the rich tapestry of community sports.
Overview of the Writer Awards
Currently, Spportunity partners with approximately 40 writers, each contributing passionate narratives through the column. The Writer Awards are hosted quarterly, with the inclusion of the past three months' published articles for consideration. The awards are divided into three categories:
- - Gangan Award: This award is given to the writer who has made significant contributions through active writing efforts beyond their usual responsibilities.
- - Best Column Award: This recognition goes to the most read article during the award period, evaluated based on page views (PV) within two weeks of publication.
- - Spportunity Award: Given to the article that resonates most with Spportunity's mission—reflecting the dedication of those typically under the radar while motivating support for striving athletes and teams. Nominees are selected, and the winner is determined through votes by Spportunity members and fellow writers.
