GumGum, a global leader in contextual advertising, recently announced the appointment of Marcus Startzel as the new Chief Executive Officer (CEO). This transition marks a pivotal moment in the evolution of GumGum's core technology, the Mindset Graph, and signals the company's move into a new growth phase within the rapidly changing advertising landscape.
Marcus Startzel: A Seasoned Leader
With over 20 years of experience in the advertising technology industry, Startzel is a recognized leader having held significant roles at notable companies such as Millennial Media, AppNexus, Amazon, and AOL. His background uniquely positions him to drive GumGum toward its ambitious future. Interestingly, Startzel began his career as a Navy officer after studying mathematics at the U.S. Naval Academy, illustrating his diverse journey to leadership.
In expressing his confidence about Startzel's leadership, Mark Suster, a member of GumGum's board and managing partner at Upfront Ventures, stated, “Marcus puts customer perspectives first and brings a proven track record of leadership to the table. Under his guidance, we trust that GumGum’s Mindset Graph and AI capabilities will evolve to contribute to the future of the advertising industry.”
Transition of Leadership
This announcement comes at a time when Philip Schrader, who has served as CEO for the past 14 years, will step down from the role. Schrader has been integral to GumGum’s innovative journey, and his leadership over the years has brought substantial growth to the company. Reflecting on his tenure, he shared, “After 14 invaluable years, I’ve come to one conclusion: true leadership is about guiding the company to its best state and humbly passing the baton with confidence. I am excited to see what new challenges the wonderful team at GumGum will shape for the future.”
Revolutionizing Advertising Through AI
As the advertising industry faces a major shift due to cookie-less environments and skepticism toward behavioral targeting, GumGum is leveraging AI technologies, including large language models (LLM), machine learning, and Agentic AI. This innovative approach allows the company to understand users' immediate context and mindset, fostering more effective and sincere advertising experiences.
At the heart of this strategy is GumGum's proprietary AI engine, the Mindset Graph. This engine analyzes vast amounts of real-time signals available on the open web, mapping user interests, contexts, and creative effectiveness to facilitate unprecedented contextual ad delivery.
Startzel emphasized, “No matter how the environment changes, one thing remains constant: companies that prioritize customer outcomes will always be chosen. GumGum delivers ads that intersect brand purpose with user interests by deeply understanding mindsets and contexts through AI.”
The company’s advertising solutions span display, video, connected TV (CTV), and sports sectors, particularly through the Relo Metrics business, helping advertisers maximize attention, engagement, and return on investment (ROI). A consistent aspect of all their products is the commitment to respect consumer privacy while achieving better advertising results.
“The role of GumGum is not just to be a contextual advertising company,” Startzel continued. “We are the company that captures mindsets. Our mission is to provide the mechanisms that allow brands to appear with the ‘optimal message’ at the ‘optimal moment.’ This marks the future of advertising, and it's already underway.”
