POWERCHINA's Commitment to Egypt's Wind Power and Energy Storage Initiatives

POWERCHINA's Commitment to Egypt's Wind Power and Energy Storage Initiatives

Introduction

POWERCHINA, also known as the Power Construction Corporation of China, is taking significant strides in advancing renewable energy initiatives in Egypt, notably focusing on wind power and energy storage solutions. With a commitment to enhancing the country’s energy transition, the company is developing a comprehensive portfolio of projects aimed at bolstering Egypt's renewable energy capacity.

Wind Power Projects

The company's wind power portfolio in Egypt boasts an impressive total capacity exceeding 1.8 gigawatts (GW). Among these projects is the operational 500MW Amunet Gulf of Suez Wind Project and two major developments currently under construction: the 1.1GW Gulf of Suez Wind Project and the 202.5MW Ras Ghareb Wind Project. The Amunet project is particularly notable for overcoming extreme environmental challenges, including high temperatures and dust storms. By optimizing construction techniques and adhering to stringent safety protocols, the project achieved project acceptance ahead of schedule and was awarded the 2025 RoSPA Health and Safety Award, showcasing POWERCHINA's dedication to health and safety standards.

Energy Storage and Local Manufacturing

In addition to wind power, POWERCHINA recognizes the vital role of energy storage in ensuring the reliability and efficiency of renewable energy. As part of this strategy, the company has initiated the construction of a new energy storage manufacturing facility for Sungrow in Ain Sokhna. This facility will span 50,000 square meters and aims to not only support local manufacturing but also contribute to the development of a clean energy supply chain in Egypt. The establishment of this facility marks a significant milestone; it will be Sungrow's first battery energy storage system manufacturing base in both the Middle East and Africa.

Job Creation and Local Partnerships

Since its entry into the Egyptian market in 2012, POWERCHINA has been a catalyst for job creation, generating over 2,000 direct jobs and 10,000 indirect jobs through its various projects. The company places a strong emphasis on skills development, having trained more than 350 professionals in varied roles within traditional and renewable energy sectors. Its commitment to local engagement is also highlighted through its collaboration with Egyptian suppliers and contractors, fostering economic growth and innovation.

One such partnership is with Elalamya General Contracting, which has worked alongside POWERCHINA since 2023, contributing to various aspects of the wind projects. The collaboration has yielded both professional and personal ties, with Mahmoud, head of Elalamya, expressing enthusiasm for the ongoing partnership and the mutual growth experienced throughout their cooperation.

Conclusion

POWERCHINA's growing renewable energy footprint in Egypt signifies a shift towards a more integrated clean energy ecosystem that encompasses generation, storage infrastructure, and localized industrial capacity. The company is poised to continue collaborating with both Egyptian and international stakeholders to push forward Egypt's national energy strategy and contribute to the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. As green development strengthens the ties between China and Egypt—celebrating 70 years of diplomatic relations—POWERCHINA is firmly committed to advancing a sustainable energy future for the nation.
