MOL Achieves Approval in Principle for New LNG Vessel Design Featuring Wind Challenger Technology

Mitsui O.S.K. Lines' New LNG Vessel Design

Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL), led by President Takeshi Hashimoto and headquartered in Minato-ku, Tokyo, has made significant strides in sustainable shipping by obtaining Approval in Principle (AiP) for a new type of membrane LNG carrier featuring four Wind Challenger wind propulsion devices. This development comes in collaboration with prominent shipbuilders, including HD Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) and Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI).

Overview of the New LNG Vessel

The newly designed LNG carrier is a remarkable feat of engineering with a cargo tank capacity of 174,000 cubic meters. The AiP was granted by Lloyd’s Register (LR), a leading classification society, after thorough assessments of safety and operational effectiveness. Furthermore, the vessel has received approval from the flag states of Marshall Islands and Liberia, signifying its adherence to international safety standards.

The adoption of the four Wind Challenger devices marks a pivotal enhancement over previous projects. MOL previously secured AiP for two Wind Challengers on conventional LNG carriers, but with this new design, the ship's bridge is strategically positioned at the front of the hull. This modification allows for the optimal placement and increased number of Wind Challengers, resulting in enhanced fuel efficiency. Preliminary estimates predict fuel consumption reductions of up to 30% per voyage and an average annual savings between 15% to 20%.

Ongoing Developments and Future Goals

Currently, detailed design work is ongoing to turn this innovative concept into a reality. To commemorate the AiP achievement, MOL will exhibit the new vessel design at the upcoming Gastech Exhibition & Conference 2025 in Milan, Italy, from September 9 to 12. A ceremonial presentation of the AiP will take place at the MOL booth, further affirming the collaborative efforts with shipyards, classification societies, and flag nations.

MOL is committed to its mid-to-long-term sustainability goal
