Mash Style Lab's Latest Environmental Initiative
Mash Style Lab, headquartered in Chiyoda, Tokyo, is launching a significant new environmental project, the "MASH GO GREEN PROJECT," aimed at combating climate change and promoting biodiversity. This initiative includes a new tree planting program in FSC® certified forests in Minamisanriku, Miyagi Prefecture, designed to contribute to ecosystem restoration and the conservation of the local natural environment.
Since establishing a Sustainability Alliance with ten partner companies in 2022, Mash Style Lab has focused on reducing CO₂ emissions and developing environmentally conscious production methods. Steps taken include minimizing the use of virgin materials and advancing to a carbon-neutral production model with strict auditing standards for green factories. The tree planting initiative is a continuation of these efforts, emphasizing the importance of biodiversity and establishing a nature-positive approach to forest management.
Tree Planting Event in Minamisanriku Forest
On October 31, 2025, Mash Style Lab will conduct its first tree planting event with 3,300 cedar saplings in the FSC® certified forests of Minamisanriku. This activity is in partnership with Sakuhō, a forestry company in the area, led by Taichi Sato. Members from Mash Group and the alliance partnered to undertake the planting.
The forest managed by Sakuhō has been carefully cultivated to promote sustainable forestry practices, achieving FSC® certification (FM certification) in 2015. This management has been pivotal in maintaining and restoring biodiversity, particularly as it serves as a potential habitat for endangered species, such as the golden eagle.
Emphasizing values of "wellness design," Mash Group resonates strongly with Sakuhō's commitment to ethical forest management. After nearly a year of research and fieldwork, their tree planting initiative focuses on enhancing regional sustainability by recognizing Minamisanriku's interconnectedness of forests, oceans, and rural areas.
By promoting forest regeneration, the project seeks to improve ecosystem services and benefits for the community as a whole, epitomizing the importance of healthy ecosystems for human well-being.
Project Goals and CO₂ Emission Reductions
The tree planting project will result in an estimated reduction of approximately 1,093 tons of CO₂ emissions, equating to what Mash Style Lab expects to emit from its auxiliary material processes in 2024. To support the ongoing efforts of the MASH GO GREEN PROJECT, starting December 26, 2024, Mash Style Lab will implement a paid shopping bag policy, redistributing a portion of the proceeds towards environmental initiatives.
Mash Style Lab is committed to reducing resource consumption, continuing tree planting efforts, and striving for carbon neutrality while engaging customers and stakeholders in these vital environmental initiatives.
Continuing Environmental Efforts
Mash Group consistently aims for a sustainable future, advocating for carbon neutrality and promoting wellness design for the community. Their activities include the MASH GO GREEN PROJECT, targeting carbon footprint reduction, biodiversity preservation, and environmental sustainability. Past initiatives include beach clean-ups and composting at their corporate events to address waste reduction.
Since 2022, Mash Group has participated in beach clean-up activities at Hirara Beach on Ishigaki Island, attracting participants from various divisions within the company. This initiative highlights the importance of environmental stewardship and educates participants on marine debris issues.
Additionally, Mash has integrated recycled materials from collected plastics in their fashion brands to promote sustainable models.
Future Information Sharing
A video documenting the Minamisanriku tree planting initiative will be released on MASH CHANNEL on December 15, 2025. This will showcase the vibrant natural beauty of the region, the planting process, and the voices of employees involved in the project, reinforcing the community messages about sustainability and biodiversity.
Mash Group is dedicated to spreading awareness of these topics and fostering dialogue on the significance of environmental preservation to protect our planet for future generations.
