Kewpie Opens New Production Facility in Tennessee to Meet Growing Demand

Kewpie Expands Production with New Facility in Tennessee

Kewpie Corporation, headquartered in Shibuya, Tokyo, has officially opened its second production site in the United States, located in Tennessee. The opening ceremony took place on May 20, where dignitaries including the Governor of Tennessee, Bill Lee, were in attendance. Kewpie, through its group company Q&B FOODS, INC., aims to commence condiment production by May 2025 at this new facility. This strategic move is designed to cater to the increasing demand across the United States, particularly in the largest salad dressing market in the world.

Enhancing Supply Chain Efficiency

The Tennessee factory is set to produce mayonnaise and dressings for both household and commercial use. By establishing this facility, Kewpie will significantly improve the speed and cost efficiency of deliveries to the Midwest and Eastern regions of the U.S. Previously, products were transported from the California plant, which incurred lengthy shipping times and higher costs. With the Tennessee plant operational, Kewpie plans to increase its production capacity up to three times, allowing for greater demand fulfillment in the region. Moreover, it will introduce a visitor space, a first for its U.S. operations, to cultivate a deeper connection with customers and expand its brand loyalty.

Commitment to the Local Economy

During the opening remarks, Kewpie President Mitsuru Takamiya emphasized the factory's role not just in the U.S. but also across the Americas. He stated, "This Tennessee factory is a critical production base for us in the region, and with its expansion, we are committed to creating jobs and positively impacting the local Tennessee economy. We aim to promote the significance and joy of food through our activities here."

The ceremony culminated in a tape-cutting event, followed by a guided tour of the production line, where attendees learned about Kewpie's history and its founding vision. It was an occasion that highlighted Kewpie's dedication to quality and innovation in food production.

Details of the New Factory

The new facility boasts significant specifications:
  • - Factory Name: Tennessee Factory
  • - Location: Montgomery County, Clarksville, Tennessee, USA
  • - Floor Space: Approximately 15,000 square meters
  • - Main Products: Household and commercial mayonnaise and dressings
  • - Annual Production Capacity: Estimated at 60,000 tonnes

The Tennessee plant joins the existing operations at the California factory, marking a major expansion for Kewpie in North America. This alignment aligns with the growing acceptance and demand for Japanese-style condiments, driven by the increase in popularity of Japanese cuisine in the U.S.

Background on Kewpie’s U.S. Operations

Kewpie's journey in the United States began in 1982 with the establishment of Q&B FOODS, INC. in Southern California, focusing on food service products. Over the years, the company has expanded its portfolio to include contract manufacturing of condiments, and since 2014, there has been a stronger emphasis on increasing the distribution of Kewpie-branded mayonnaise and dressings. The brand has seen rising recognition and support, particularly as consumer trends lean toward quality and rich flavors. Kewpie mayonnaise, known for its creamy richness, and its roasted sesame dressing have garnered a strong following in Asian and American grocery markets alike.

As Kewpie moves forward with the Tennessee facility, it remains committed to establishing a meaningful presence in the U.S., furthering its mission to enrich lives through quality food.
