Consumers Energy Foundation Grants $150,000 to Support Workforce Development in Jackson, Michigan
In a significant move to bolster workforce development in the area, the Consumers Energy Foundation has announced the allocation of $150,000 to the Michigan AFL-CIO Workforce Development Institute (WDI) in Jackson as part of its 2025 People Awards. This grant is aimed at enhancing the Access for All program, specifically designed to support a new local workforce cohort.
Brandon Hofmeister, the president of the Consumers Energy Foundation, expressed the foundation's commitment to building equitable pathways for families in Jackson County. He stated, "Michigan AFL-CIO, WDI's commitment to build equitable, accessible pathways to family-sustaining careers is essential in addressing the immediate and long-term needs of Jackson County's residents." The foundation aims to provide the necessary resources that allow participants to focus solely on their workforce training, without the distraction of other basic needs.
With the funds from this grant, WDI plans to eliminate various barriers to participation in its programs. These barriers often include essential needs such as transportation, childcare support, stipends for participants, work attire, and protective equipment, all critical to ensuring that participants have the opportunity to engage wholeheartedly in their training programs. Colleen Sullivan, deputy director of Michigan AFL-CIO, emphasized the partnership's importance, saying, "Our partnership with the Consumers Energy Foundation will help us to prepare underserved residents with the physical, cultural and emotional demands of apprenticeship programs."
This funding will especially benefit those who fall below the ALICE (Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed) threshold, ensuring they have access to fundamental necessities necessary for completing skilled trade workforce development programs successfully. Sullivan expressed gratitude towards the Consumers Energy Foundation for their investment in their mission, highlighting its vital role in the community.
The 2025 People Awards are the second of three major grant distributions planned for this year, which total $1.5 million. Earlier this year, the foundation awarded grants under the Planet Awards category in April, and it is set to present the Prosperity Awards in the fall, focusing on initiatives that foster economic development in the region.
