Orange Successfully Tests Fujitsu's 1FINITY Optical Transport for Sustainable Networking

Orange's Successful Evaluation of Fujitsu's 1FINITY Optical Transport

In a significant advancement in optical networking technology, Orange S.A. has successfully completed a lab evaluation of Fujitsu's innovative 1FINITY™ T900 Series Transponder. This series is designed to meet the increasing demands for high-capacity and sustainable networking solutions in today’s digital age. The trial validated the impressive performance of the transponder, showcasing its capability to operate at 800Gbps wavelengths over long distances while consuming minimal power.

The Challenge of Growing Data Traffic

As network operators strive to keep up with the soaring demands for data, the challenges they face are vast. Rising data traffic combined with increasing operational costs creates a pressing need for technologies that can effectively transport more data at a lower cost per bit. Energy costs also mount, making it crucial for operators to pursue lower power consumption solutions to meet environmental sustainability goals.

Orange’s evaluation conducted at their Innovation Labs in France highlighted the efficiency of the 1FINITY T900 transponder. Remarkably, the system sustained low power consumption across a range of transmission rates, achieving distances of at least 1600 kilometers at an 800Gbps transmission rate while drawing less than 150 watts of power. These outcomes suggest that greater transport distances and capacities can be achieved without escalating power consumption.

Innovative Technology Behind the 1FINITY T900

Fujitsu's 1FINITY T900 leverages a unique closed-loop liquid cooling technology, which markedly enhances energy efficiency. The system's capability to support up to 1.2Tbps per wavelength fosters increased spectral efficiency, optimizing capacity and reach. As a result, this translates to reduced costs per bit per kilometer, through more efficient operating costs and improved sustainability.

Houmed Ibrahim, the Optical Transport Innovation leader at Orange, emphasized that the evaluation reaffirms the company’s commitment to deploying high-performance networks that minimize power consumption. Hideki Matsui, head of the Photonics System Business Unit at Fujitsu, further noted that the 1FINITY T900 enables extreme scaling and reliable terabit performance, consuming up to 70% less energy at 800Gbps wavelengths compared to traditional systems.

A Step Towards a Sustainable Future

In a parallel development, Fujitsu is set to establish a new entity, 1FINITY Inc., on July 1, consolidating its network product and operation sectors. This strategic move is poised to drive the global delivery of high-quality optical and wireless solutions, ultimately contributing to a more sustainable future for the telecommunications industry.

This collaboration marks a crucial step in revolutionizing how high-capacity networks are deployed and operated, reflecting a broader trend towards sustainable practices in technology development. As the digital landscape continues to evolve, Fujitsu's 1FINITY T900 and Orange's ongoing commitment to innovation signal a bright future for environmentally-conscious, high-performance networking solutions.
