Improving Workplace Safety: Three-Quarters of Employers Show Progress Over Three Years

Enhancing Workplace Safety: A Continuing Commitment

The National Safety Council (NSC) has released its 2024-2025 MSD Solutions Index Pledge Community Report, shedding light on significant improvements in workplace safety regarding musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs), which remain the primary cause of workplace injuries. The findings indicate that a remarkable 76% of participating organizations have made strides in their MSD prevention strategies over the past three years, establishing a commitment to foster a safer work environment.

Progress and Challenges

The MSD Solutions Index was developed by the NSC MSD Solutions Lab, which was created in 2021 with support from Amazon. This index assesses how organizations are tackling MSDs through three focal points: risk reduction, safety culture, and collaboration. Notably, the majority of organizations participating over the last three years have been rated proactive in their approach to MSD prevention. However, there are still notable deficiencies in measurable risk reduction and the implementation of new MSD prevention technologies.

The report highlights that nearly three-quarters (72%) of organizations that have engaged with the MSD Solutions Index consecutively for three years improved their overall safety scores. This progress underscores the efficacy of committed participation in the MSD Pledge, indicating that increased focus on MSD prevention translates into tangible advancements in workplace safety.

Paige DeBaylo, PhD, director of the MSD Solutions Lab at NSC, expressed optimism about the continued dedication of organizations to enhance safety at the workplace through proactive cultural changes and worker engagement. However, she emphasized the need for further efforts to set specific risk reduction goals and address non-physical workplace factors, such as job stress and team dynamics. Furthermore, leveraging emerging technologies plays a crucial role in sustaining long-term MSD prevention efforts.

Key Findings

Several essential insights arose from the latest report:

  • - Ergonomics and MSD Prevention Programs: Almost 90% of organizations have implemented ergonomics or MSD prevention programs.
  • - Shifting Toward Proactive Measures: There’s a notable increase in organizations tracking leading indicators, indicating a transition to more proactive prevention methodologies.
  • - Recognition of Non-Physical Risks: A staggering 98% of organizations recognize the significance of non-physical risks, yet only half actively measure or manage these factors.
  • - Engagement with Technology: While three-quarters of companies are utilizing MSD prevention technology, about 25% reported limited familiarity with available solutions.

A Global Initiative

The MSD Solutions Index is a vital part of the MSD Pledge, a global initiative launched in 2022 aimed at uniting organizations to reduce workplace MSDs through innovation, collaboration, and data-driven safety enhancements. Hundreds of organizations have signed this pledge, showing commitment to measurable progress and transparent reporting on safety practices.

The report concludes with several recommendations for organizations aimed at enhancing their MSD prevention practices, such as setting clear safety objectives, involving frontline workers in decision-making, and adopting advanced interventions that go beyond personal protective equipment, including engineering controls and technology-assisted solutions.
