New Fellowship Program Launched to Empower Conservationists for Ocean Restoration

Celebrating Conservation: The Wave and Conservation Nation Fellowship Program

On June 8, 2026, in celebration of World Ocean Day, Wave—a platform dedicated to marine restoration—and Conservation Nation, a non-profit focused on enhancing conservation efforts, unveiled a transformative Fellowship program aimed at championing ocean conservationists. The initiative seeks to empower budding leaders in marine science and conservation, providing them with grants and support to amplify their impactful work.

Empowering Conservation Innovators

The inaugural scholarships were awarded to three outstanding Fellows, recognized for their groundbreaking projects designed to safeguard marine species and ecosystems. The recipients include:

  • - Dr. Reem AlMealla: Currently spearheading the FinSight Bahrain Project, Dr. AlMealla is developing a comprehensive eDNA dataset intended to shed light on shark and ray populations in Bahrain's marine environment.

  • - Dr. Michelle Fournet: In Alaska, Dr. Fournet is employing cutting-edge bioacoustic techniques along with advanced statistical tools to study communication patterns among humpback whales, enhancing our understanding of these majestic creatures.

  • - Maula Nadia: Focused on Indonesia, Nadia is pioneering a locally managed marine area strategy through the Elasmobranch Project Indonesia aimed at conserving rhinorays, a lesser-known but critically endangered species.

These projects exemplify the innovative approaches being taken to address the pressing challenges our oceans face today.

Fostering Growth through Community Engagement

The Fellowship program is designed not just to provide funding but also to connect these conservationists with a vast network of professionals. Each Fellow is granted access to mentorship opportunities, helping them develop their careers while simultaneously furthering public awareness and educational initiatives in their respective communities. This collaborative effort bridges the gap between local conservation actions and global strategies to ensure sustainable ocean health.

HRH Princess Reema Bandar Al-Saud, the Founder of Wave, shared her enthusiasm for the program: "Through the Wave Fellows with Conservation Nation initiative, we are thrilled to support remarkable conservationists and their efforts toward ocean regeneration, aiming to accomplish this monumental task within a human generation."

Application and Selection Process

Selecting the inaugural fellows involved a meticulous global search utilizing Conservation Nation’s extensive network of conservation professionals and organizations. Candidates submitted applications that were reviewed based on alignment with conservation goals, project viability, potential impact, and commitment to community education. Those who advanced were invited to submit videos demonstrating their vision and suitability as ambassadors for the program.

This rigorous selection process ensured that the Fellows chosen are not only passionate about their work but also uniquely positioned to effect change in their regions.

Join the Movement

As the landscape of marine conservation evolves, programs like the Wave Fellowship, in conjunction with Conservation Nation, play an essential role in nurturing the next generation of environmental leaders. Together, they are committed to empowering those who share a vision of thriving oceans, ultimately contributing to the well-being of our planet.
