Arizona Student Reaches the National Finals of the Mott Million Dollar Challenge



In an inspiring showcase of innovation and sustainability, Amaira Srivastava, a promising ninth-grade student from Gilbert, Arizona, has emerged as one of the top semifinalists in the Mott Million Dollar Challenge, a prestigious pitch competition dedicated to K-12 students across the nation. This year, over 5,300 young entrepreneurs from all 50 states and Washington, D.C. participated, submitting more than 3,700 unique business ideas and social solutions. The FlavoPeel Cup: A Solution to Plastic Pollution



Amaira's initiative began from a pressing concern regarding plastic waste and food scraps. She ingeniously developed the FlavoPeel Cup, a sustainable alternative to conventional plastic cups, crafted from repurposed fruit peels combined with low-cost, natural ingredients. The cup utilizes dehydrated fruit peels collected from local restaurants, grocers, and her own network of family and friends, ensuring that waste is minimized and transformed into a useful product.

Through her innovative approach, the FlavoPeel Cup is fully home-compostable, representing a significant advancement in sustainable product design. Amaira's dedication to her project shines through in her testing processes, which involved using a spectrophotometer in her school’s laboratory to verify that the cups not only decompose but also release beneficial flavonoids—antioxidant compounds known for their health-enhancing properties.
