Energy Vault and PG&E Launch Innovative Microgrid for Energy Resiliency in Calistoga

Energy Vault and PG&E Unite for the Future of Energy

In a significant milestone for renewable energy solutions, Energy Vault Holdings Inc. and Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E) have successfully completed the Calistoga Resiliency Center (CRC). Located in Calistoga, California, this facility is recognized as the world’s first ultra-long duration hybrid battery coupled with hydrogen energy storage microgrid. As wildfires increasingly threaten the stability of California's power supply, the CRC emerges as a pioneering answer to these challenges.

A Transformative Energy Solution

The CRC serves approximately 1,600 PG&E customers in downtown Calistoga, transforming how energy resiliency is approached during Public Safety Power Shutoffs (PSPS). This center is designed to ensure continuous power supply, notably during critical events like extreme weather. The microgrid utilizes an innovative combination of hydrogen fuel cells and lithium-ion batteries, providing an impressive 293 megawatt-hours (MWh) of energy storage capacity. In case of PSPS events, the system can deliver at least 48 hours of uninterrupted energy, with peak power capabilities reaching up to 8.5 megawatts (MW).

Energy Vault's VaultOS™ Energy Management System manages this complex array, ensuring seamless operations between subsystems while maintaining communication with PG&E’s Distribution Control Center (DCC). By fulfilling California’s Renewable Portfolio Standard (RPS), this zero-emission project is not only a technical marvel but also a critical step forward in sustainable energy practices.

Addressing Climate Challenges

Craig Horne, Senior VP of Advanced Energy Solutions at Energy Vault, emphasized the importance of the CRC in delivering resilience to communities vulnerable to climate-driven power disruptions. “The Calistoga Resiliency Center exemplifies the power of innovation and partnership,” Horne stated. This project is a key component of Energy Vault's
