Japanese Students Shine at Regeneron ISEF 2025



The Regeneron International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF) 2025, held in Columbus, Ohio, from May 10 to May 16, showcased remarkable talents from Japan. This international competition witnessed students bringing forth innovative research projects, with several securing prestigious awards.

Achievements at ISEF 2025


The Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) confirmed that students representing Japan obtained awards in various categories. They received two major accolades: a third-place award in Environmental Engineering and a fourth-place award in Physics and Astronomy.

Award Winners


1. Minister of Education Award
- 3rd Place in Environmental Engineering: Yumina Nishida, a first-year student at the University of Tokyo, presented foundational research aimed at practical applications of biofuels and soil improvement materials using filamentous algae.
- 4th Place in Physics and Astronomy: Yoshihiro Tanaka, also a first-year student at the University of Tokyo, explored the deformation of water bells caused by membrane rupture.

2. Minister of Education Special Awards
- Ami Okubo (Tokyo Dental University): Investigated the reproductive ecology of the genus Cynops in Japan.
- Haruka Kimura (Niihama National College of Technology): Developed a water purification system utilizing magnetic photocatalytic particles.
- Yoshifumi Kudo (Asano High School): Examined the long-term effects of biochar application on carbon balance in forest ecosystems.
- Yuto Kuroki (Waseda University): Worked on optimizing drone delivery systems to reduce energy consumption and delivery time through advanced clustering techniques.
- Katsuki Ono (Keio University): Researched the preservation and ecological conditions of bivalve species found in domestic waterways.
