Shopify Japan's April Commerce Trends: The Rise of Outdoor and Event Purchases

April 2025 Commerce Trends in Japan

In a recent analysis conducted by Shopify Japan, a data-driven overview of the sales trends for April 2025 reveals interesting insights into consumer behavior as the seasons change from spring to early summer. Based on sales data between April 1 and April 30, a comparison with the previous month indicates that the warmer weather and the upcoming Golden Week holidays have led to an increased demand for outdoor products, event-related items, and practical goods for the summer.

As one of Japan's significant holiday periods approaches, consumer interest in leisure activities, domestic travel, and seasonal home decor transformations is on the rise. From the gathered sales data, it becomes evident that consumers are preparing to enjoy nature as they embrace outdoor activities. The noteworthy trends for April 2025 include:

Rising Garden Care Needs

The demand for lawn mowers has seen a significant spike, up by 160.6% compared to the previous month. As the weather warms, consumers are increasingly focused on maintaining their gardens and enhancing the exterior appearance of their homes.

Early Arrival of Camping Season

Camping supplies are witnessing a surge in demand, with sales of the “Vis-A-Vis Tent” increasing by 156.4%, and general tents up by 99.8%. This suggests that families and friend groups are gearing up for Golden Week trips, indicating a strong interest in outdoor excursions.

Preparation for the Rising Temperatures

As the temperature starts to climb, utilitarian products for warm weather, such as handheld fans and mist fans, have seen a remarkable increase, up by 154.8%. This signals a clear demand for heat prevention items as consumers prepare for the summer months ahead.

Event and Festival Season Preparations

With the spring events and festivals on the horizon, sales of event banners increased by 159.7%. This uptick shows that preparations for personal and public events are moving into full swing ahead of Golden Week.

Thriving Demand for Pop Culture Collectibles

In a notable trend within the hobbies and creative arts sector, collectible pins have soared by 563.4%, and autographed merchandise has risen by 306.3%. This growth suggests a growing interest in pop culture, particularly in anime, music, and sports, spurred by local events, outdoor markets, and Golden Week celebrations.

Sean Broughton, the interim Country Manager for Shopify Japan, commented on the latest data:
"The sales trends in April show how Japanese consumers are becoming more active in response to rising temperatures and the arrival of outdoor season. From seasonal activities like camping and gardening to event-related collector goods, Shopify’s merchants are adeptly capturing the seasonal demands leading to Golden Week and early summer, catering effectively to consumer needs."
