A New Era for Starbucks Coffee: The Maiden Harvest from the Valley of Volcanoes
Starbucks Coffee Japan Corporation, led by CEO Hisako Morii, is set to debut a new coffee product harvested from its newly established Valley of Volcanoes farm at the Starbucks Reserve® Roastery in Tokyo. The coffee, named
Guatemala Valley of Volcanoes™, will be available for purchase starting December 26, marking a significant milestone for Starbucks as this is the first time coffee from their third self-owned farm will reach consumers.
A Farm for Sustainable Solutions
The Valley of Volcanoes farm is located in the Antigua region of Central America, surrounded by the majestic Agua, Fuego, and Acatenango volcanoes. The area is not only rich in biodiversity but also closely accessible to protected natural territories, emphasizing sustainable coffee cultivation practices. The fertile volcanic soil here, along with varied altitude and climate, provides an ideal setting for research and experimental coffee cultivation.
Around the globe, small-scale farmers are the backbone of coffee production. Most of the coffee sourced by Starbucks comes from over 500,000 farms, predominantly run by smallholders, who are vital to the supply chain. Unfortunately, these farmers face numerous hardships including unstable yields due to climate change, rising costs for fertilizers and materials, and challenges in accessing advanced technology and information necessary to enhance productivity.
By tapping into the Valley of Volcanoes as a research center, Starbucks aims to confront these pressing issues and encourage a more sustainable future for coffee production. The farm will focus on initiatives to maintain soil health, promote agroforestry that harmonizes forestry and agriculture, and develop production models that are accessible to small-scale farmers vulnerable to climate fluctuations. Additionally, the project will explore effective water usage and recycling of by-products generated during processing, proposing a circular approach to address local production challenges.
The insights gained from these projects will be shared through Starbucks' global network of Farmer Support Centers, helping to support coffee communities worldwide to continue producing consistently, even amidst various challenges.
An Exclusive Flavor Experience
The
Guatemala Valley of Volcanoes™ coffee represents a unique small-lot harvest by this new farm and will offer customers an exceptional tasting experience. It is characterized by a refreshing citrus burst reminiscent of oranges and a hint of yuzu, along with a gentle, almond-like richness and a smooth finish that lingers with caramel-like sweetness. Due to its limited initial harvest, this special coffee will only be available at the Starbucks Reserve® Roastery in Tokyo. This is a unique opportunity to savor a distinct cup that signifies a new beginning for Starbucks’ farming endeavors.

Starbucks' Commitment to Farming
Starbucks originally started its farming initiative in 2014 with the establishment of the Hacienda Alsacia farm in Costa Rica. The addition of the Valley of Volcanoes farm in Guatemala marks the expansion of its self-owned farms to three, alongside the “Highlands of Alsacia” farm that has focused on automation technology for farmer support. This recent launch is a step toward advancing the collaborative efforts of these farms to create a sustainable future for coffee production, becoming a remarkable symbol of the journey ahead.
