Dematic Multishuttle® 2 Achieves Cradle to Cradle Certified® Bronze Status

In a major advancement for sustainable supply chain automation, Dematic, a world leader in supply chain automation, has announced that its Multishuttle® 2 has received the Cradle to Cradle Certified® Bronze certification. This recognition makes the Multishuttle® 2 the first shuttle-based automated storage and retrieval system (AS/RS) to achieve this distinguished certification. The Cradle to Cradle certification, awarded by the Cradle to Cradle Products Innovation Institute, highlights the importance of sustainable and transparent solutions in the logistics industry.

Chris Steiner, Senior Vice President of Product Management at Dematic, expressed pride in this accomplishment, stating, "The Dematic Multishuttle 2 has been a crucial part of our customers' operations for over two decades. This recognition underscores our commitment to sustainable innovation throughout our supply chain and holds us accountable for continuously enhancing our production systems."

The Multishuttle® 2 is a high-speed AS/RS designed to enhance storage density while managing inventory by storing, buffering, consolidating, and sequencing products. Since its launch in 2006, the technology has played a pivotal role in realizing the principles of Industry 4.0 within logistics, becoming a significant component of Dematic's automation portfolio.

The certification process involved a comprehensive evaluation, confirming that the Multishuttle® 2 is produced responsibly, with thorough adherence to stringent standards related to material health, recyclability, renewable energy usage, water management, and social justice. During this rigorous assessment, all component suppliers of the Multishuttle® 2 were required to present their processes for a transparent evaluation.

Dr. Annette Winterl, Project Lead for EPEA, a certification body involved in the C2C certification program, noted, "From an assessment standpoint, the Dematic Multishuttle® 2 project was technically complex and highly fascinating. With hundreds of components and a vast supplier network, it is among the most intricate products we have ever assessed. The Dematic Multishuttle 2 demonstrates how leading companies can drive innovation while ensuring responsible material choices and transparent supply chains."

The Cradle to Cradle Certified Bronze level is specifically applicable to the Dematic Multishuttle® 2 manufactured in Dematic's facility in Stříbro, Czech Republic, and is valid until June 2028.

Research Engineer Susanne Felker at Dematic added, "The Dematic Multishuttle® 2 showcases a very high rate of material reuse; however, we have identified areas with potential for further improvement. Receiving this C2C certification marks the beginning of our ongoing process to enhance this technology, which we aim to build upon."
