Community Solar Initiative Launches in Illinois, Scholarships Awarded to Students
Community Solar Initiative Launch in Illinois
On June 24, 2026, a significant step towards renewable energy and educational support was celebrated in Machesney Park, Illinois, where New Energy Equity, a subsidiary of ALLETE Inc., ceremoniously launched a new community solar project. This initiative, boasting a capacity of 5.5 MW, is set to deliver clean energy, enough to power approximately 1,002 homes annually. Moreover, it comes with an exciting commitment to support local students through an impressive scholarship program.
A Celebration of Progress and Support
The energization event not only marked the official go-live of the solar project but also recognized the dedication of students from the Harlem School District. Surrounded by community leaders and educators, the four distinguished seniors awarded scholarships were Ana Besevic, Melina Coletta, Haley Fulton, and Parker Lipinski. These scholarships will collectively amount to $250,000 over the solar project’s lifetime, supporting students in their academic and athletic pursuits.
Superintendent Terrell Yarbrough expressed pride in this collaborative venture, stating how critical educational support alongside sustainable energy aligns with the school district's commitment to fostering an enriching environment for its students. The partnership with New Energy Equity will allow the Harlem School District to harness the benefits of renewable energy without imposing additional costs on taxpayers.
A Sustainable Solution
This solar project not only provides lease payments to the district but also contributes electricity bill credits which will help streamline budgets across the district's nine schools. Community members participating in the solar program will benefit through lowered electricity bills, making green energy more accessible.
The project is expected to generate about 8.3 million kWh of renewable energy each year, representing a significant environmental impact and offering a promising solution for rising electricity demands across the region. This underscores the importance of local initiatives in contributing towards broader environmental goals and engaging communities in the renewable energy movement.
Kyle Marchesseault, VP of Marketing at New Energy Equity, noted the pride his team feels in delivering a project that resonates deeply with community needs.
