In a significant move to promote education in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) and sustainability, AFS Intercultural Programs has announced the launch of the AFS Global STEM Innovators scholarships. This initiative is designed for U.S. youth aged 15 to 17 and aims to provide them with the essential skills needed to thrive in a rapidly changing global environment.

Program Overview



The AFS Global STEM Innovators program offers a transformative six-week experience, comprising a mixture of virtual learning and an immersive in-person workshop. This full-scholarship initiative is targeted at 30 passionate young individuals who are eager to deepen their understanding of STEM principles and sustainable practices.

Program Structure:
  • - Virtual Exchange: This online segment runs from May 30 to June 29, 2025, allowing participants to engage with a specially curated curriculum that bridges STEM education with real-world sustainability issues.
  • - In-Person Workshop: Taking place in Houston, TX, from July 18 to July 24, 2025, this weeklong workshop will expand on the concepts learned during the virtual phase, providing additional opportunities for hands-on experiences, field trips, and interactions with industry leaders.

Eligibility Criteria


To apply, candidates must meet specific age and residency requirements, which include:
  • - Age: Participants should have birthdates between January 1, 2008, and July 30, 2010.
  • - Residency: Applicants must be legal residents of the United States, with particular focus on areas including:
- Illinois: Chicago/Cook County
- Indiana: Lake County
- Louisiana: City of Houma, Evangeline Parish, St. Landry Parish, West Baton Rouge
- Tennessee: Jackson, Murfreesboro, Union City
- Texas: Bexar County, Harris County, Houston, Katy
- Washington: Whatcom County

Throughout the program, scholars will also gain an AFS Global Competence Certificate, recognized worldwide, showcasing their enhanced skills in cross-cultural communication, empathy, and conflict resolution.
