Okayama University Elementary School Builds Global Bonds with Taiwanese Peers through Online Interaction

In a significant step towards fostering international relationships, Okayama University's affiliated elementary school recently organized an online exchange with several elementary schools in Kaohsiung City, Taiwan. This interaction took place on December 17, 2025, involving sixth-grade students and is a part of ongoing educational initiatives developed through partnerships with Taiwan's National Taiwan Normal University. The proposal for this collaboration came from Professor Sang Hwei-Ling, who plays a key role in the Japan-Taiwan Science Education Exchange, and Professor Toshiyuki Ito, a previous faculty member at Okayama University’s Faculty of Education.

During the virtual meeting, students from Okayama introduced their school and their hometown in English, sharing insights about the culture and customs of Japan. Subsequently, they performed a medley of music from Studio Ghibli, which they had practiced extensively. Each Taiwanese school also showcased their own talents, presenting their school introductions followed by captivating musical performances, which created an atmosphere of mutual appreciation and excitement among the students despite the physical distance.

The event reinforced the importance of cultural exchange and collaboration in education, as participants engaged in lively interactions, sharing questions such as “What subject do you like?” and responding enthusiastically. These exchanges not only bridged the geographical gap but also fostered a sense of community and friendship among the young students.

In the spirit of continuous engagement, future interactions are planned, with students from the Okayama University affiliated school expected to visit Taiwan in the next academic year. This initiative highlights Okayama University’s commitment to expanding educational horizons and nurturing global citizens equipped with cross-cultural understanding.

Moreover, Okayama University and its affiliated schools are dedicated to innovative educational approaches, promoting active learning environments and substantial participation from both students and faculty. The success of this exchange can motivate similar initiatives that benefit students by broadening their perspectives and encouraging them to engage with diverse cultures through collaborative, hands-on experiences.

Participants created a vibrant atmosphere during the online session, providing everyone with opportunities to learn more about each other's traditions and educational systems. Such initiatives not only empower students to develop their language skills but also enhance their abilities to work collaboratively and appreciate global diversity.

Looking ahead, Okayama University emphasizes its role as a regional core research university and is enthusiastic about supporting endeavors that promote sustainable practices aligned with the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). By fostering such connections, the institution aspires to be at the forefront of educational innovation in Japan and beyond, exemplifying its vision to be a leading global partner in education and research.

As exchanges become more prevalent, students and educators alike can seize opportunities to learn from each other, marking a new era of educational collaboration that transcends borders. Stay tuned for further developments and initiatives as Okayama University continues to pave the way for enriching educational experiences that connect students around the globe.
