UNESCO and ICANN Join Forces for Linguistic Diversity

In a groundbreaking move, UNESCO and the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) have declared a new partnership aimed at fostering linguistic diversity in the digital realm. This collaboration is set to make the Internet significantly more accessible to hundreds of millions of users around the globe, who predominantly communicate in their local languages.

Addressing the Digital Divide

Today’s digital world predominantly supports a mere 400 languages online, representing only a small fraction of the over 7,000 languages spoken worldwide. As Audrey Azoulay, Director-General of UNESCO, articulated, "In an increasingly digital world, facilitating access to the Internet for all is essential. This agreement, aimed at enhancing language diversity, is a crucial step toward creating an Internet that is accessible to everyone."

UNESCO and ICANN’s partnership will focus on promoting the secure utilization of additional scripts and languages within the Domain Name System (DNS). This initiative is vital as domain names and email addresses serve as the foundation for online access and communication. The organizations will work collaboratively to encourage the universal acceptance (UA) of all domain names and email addresses, regardless of length, language, or script, across all internet-enabled applications, devices, and systems.

The Importance of Internationalized Domain Names (IDNs)

A significant emphasis will be placed on Internationalized Domain Names (IDNs), which allow users to select domain names and email addresses in their native scripts and languages. This shift is not merely about convenience; it represents a monumental step towards ensuring that everyone can harness the full social and economic power of the Internet. As of now, more than 5.4 billion individuals are regular users of the Internet, with approximately 2.6 billion more anticipated to come online. Many of these users communicate in local languages, making the promotion of IDNs even more critical.

Kurtis Lindqvist, President and CEO of ICANN, expressed optimism about the collaboration, stating, "We look forward to working with UNESCO to bridge digital divides and connect communities. Supporting domain names in local scripts and languages is essential for creating a diverse and multilingual online experience. Despite the necessity for IDNs, many software applications for validating domain names and email addresses utilize outdated methods that do not accommodate all domain names, particularly those in local languages and scripts. Therefore, it’s imperative that companies and stakeholders ensure their systems are UA-capable to leverage the advantages of this partnership effectively.

Such enhancements will allow users to access websites and services in their preferred languages, spurring greater engagement and inclusivity online. This initiative also serves to bolster cultural preservation by allowing individuals to express their identities and values through the linguistic medium they are most comfortable with.
