Reju Launches Its First Research Facility in the U.S. to Enhance Textile Recycling

Reju Opens First U.S. Research & Development Center in Conshohocken, Pennsylvania



Reju, a company specializing in the regeneration of textile materials, has recently opened its inaugural Research & Development Center in Conshohocken, Pennsylvania. This facility marks a significant milestone for the company as it expands its operations to North America. The new R&D Center is situated within the existing research center operated by Technip Energies, specifically their Advanced Materials and Catalysts division.

The Conshohocken center is set to accelerate the implementation of Reju's innovative recycling technologies, which are pivotal for the development of next-generation circular solutions. According to Gregory Breyta, the Director of Research and Development at Reju, this facility is essential for transitioning technologies from a conceptual phase to industrial-scale solutions that can effectively manage post-consumer textile waste.

Previously, Reju's core research team was based at IBM's Almaden Research Center in San Jose, California, where they pioneered the Volcat depolymerization technology. This cutting-edge catalytic chemical recycling process breaks down polyester into reusable raw materials, showcasing Reju's commitment to sustainability within the textile industry.

Breyta expressed enthusiasm about joining Reju, stating, "I am excited to be joining such an innovative company and to be part of the team moving the technology towards industrialization and supporting the infrastructure for true post-consumer textile-to-textile recycling at scale."

The new facility will focus on a comprehensive development spectrum, from initial feasibility studies to kilo-scale production. Key areas of emphasis include polyester recycling, solutions for mixed fabrics, and the exploration of new circular chemistry pathways. This approach allows for rapid iterations and advancements in Reju's technologies, steering the company towards industrial-scale realism. The R&D Center is also expected to support the development and validation of technologies intended for future deployment in Reju's Regeneration Hubs around the world.

One of the strategic advantages of situating the R&D Center within Technip Energies' research framework is the access to decades of expertise in catalysis, process development, and technology integration. This collaboration is anticipated to expedite the scaling process and improve overall efficiency.

The establishment of this center is part of Reju's overarching strategy to create a closed-loop recycling ecosystem that transforms discarded textiles back into viable products. Alongside its newly established U.S. facility, Reju is also actively developing its global infrastructure, which includes the Regeneration Hub Zero in Frankfurt, Germany, and upcoming hubs in Sittard (Netherlands), Lacq (France), and Rochester (New York).

Breyta highlights that together, these facilities will form a replicable global circular structure aimed at converting the textile waste of today into the raw materials for tomorrow. This innovative approach not only promotes sustainability but also enhances the potential for creating a more resource-efficient textile industry.
