Samsung Electro-Mechanics Launches Innovative MLCC for LiDAR Use in Autonomous Vehicles

On February 5, 2025, Samsung Electro-Mechanics announced a significant advancement in the field of automotive technology with the launch of the world's first multilayer ceramic capacitor (MLCC) specifically designed for LiDAR applications in autonomous vehicles. This innovative product, identified as CL05Y225KP66PN, is compactly sized at 1005, boasting a capacitance of 2.2 microfarads (uF) and operating at a high voltage of 10 volts. The launch positions Samsung at the forefront of LiDAR technology integration, a crucial component for enhancing the reliability and precision of autonomous driving systems.

Breakthrough in MLCC Technology

Traditionally, ceramic capacitors faced challenges when it came to balancing high voltage and capacitance. To achieve higher voltages, the dielectric material must typically be made thicker. This often results in fewer internal dielectric layers, thus limiting the capacitance capabilities. However, through unique additives and advanced manufacturing techniques, Samsung has successfully created an MLCC that minimizes internal voids within the dielectric structure. This innovation allows for stable performance even under high voltage conditions, a revolutionary step for automotive applications.

With voltage capabilities around 60% greater than the previous 6.3 volts standard, this MLCC is also the first to be AEC-Q200 qualified at such specifications, a critical standard that ensures reliability for automobile components. This new product is expected to significantly boost various automotive applications including Advanced Driver-Assistance Systems (ADAS), body control systems, chassis components, and infotainment systems, supporting both power stabilization and accurate signal transmission.

Serving Growing Automotive Markets

Choi Jeremy, Executive Vice President and head of the Component Solution Unit at Samsung Electro-Mechanics, remarked on the mounting demand for high-performance MLCCs fuelled by the ongoing electrification movement within the automotive sector. He emphasized that the company is determined to uphold its competitive edge by securing essential technologies relating to materials, equipment, and the manufacturing process of MLCCs. This strategic approach will allow Samsung to meet the emerging needs of high-value markets effectively.

As the automotive industry increasingly adopts electric and autonomous vehicles, the requirements for reliable electronic components continue to escalate. Samsung Electro-Mechanics’ latest MLCC development is poised to play a crucial role in this evolution, promising enhanced performance and reliability in powered systems.

In summary, the introduction of this cutting-edge MLCC not only underlines Samsung Electro-Mechanics' commitment to technological advancement but also sets a new standard in the integration of electronic components for the rapidly evolving automotive landscape. The future of autonomous driving appears brighter with technologies such as these paving the way for safer and more efficient vehicle operations.
