Denteric Initiates Phase I Safety Study for Alzheimer's Therapy

In particular, studies have pointed to Porphyromonas gingivalis, a bacterium that often infects dental tissues and is known to induce chronic inflammation, as a potential contributor to the neurodegenerative process. This bacterium produces harmful proteins, termed gingipains, which can migrate to the brain and exacerbate Alzheimer's symptoms.

In response to this association, Denteric is working on a therapy designed to enhance the immune system's ability to combat these gingipains, potentially rectifying one of the disease's fundamental drivers of inflammation. The randomized, double-blind study will recruit 10 participants suffering from early-stage Alzheimer’s who have tested positive for Porphyromonas gingivalis in their saliva. By focusing on this specific cohort, Denteric aims to evaluate both the safety and the immune response elicited by its novel therapy.

The Royal Melbourne Hospital will serve as the first recruitment site, with plans for Austin Health to join the study shortly.
