Philips Future Health Index 2025 Report Overview
On July 28, 2023, Philips Japan launched the Japanese version of its
Future Health Index 2025, aimed at healthcare leaders, especially hospital administrators. This report examined the impact and potential of AI and innovative technologies in medical settings from the perspectives of healthcare professionals and patients. Conducted in its 10th iteration, the survey included responses from over
1,900 healthcare professionals and
16,000 patients across
16 countries from December 2024 to April 2025.
Focused Insights for Japan's Healthcare
The report specifically addresses Japan’s critical healthcare challenges, such as rapid aging, workforce shortages, and rising costs. The research highlighted how AI can assist in enhancing the quality and efficiency of medical services. According to the findings,
75% of Japanese healthcare workers believe that AI and predictive analytics enable early intervention, potentially saving lives. Optimistically,
60% express confidence that AI could improve patient outcomes. However, the trust index for patients remains low, with only
33% believing that AI can enhance healthcare, significantly below the global average of
59%.
Healthcare Professionals' Burdens and AI Necessity
Research demonstrates that about
22% of healthcare professionals in Japan report spending less time with patients compared to five years ago, attributing this to increased administrative tasks. Additionally,
65% face data access challenges that result in lost medical consultation time during shifts, with more than
20% losing
over 45 minutes per shift.
In Japan, where natural disasters are frequent, AI's application in triage during emergencies and optimal resource allocation has garnered increased attention. However, the delay in adopting AI raises concerns about
time loss, missed opportunities for early intervention, and deteriorating care quality, prompting calls for expedient integration of AI solutions in healthcare.
Bridging the Trust Gap
One key finding from the survey was the notable trust gap between healthcare professionals and patients concerning AI. While
84% of healthcare workers feel confident in using AI to create medical records, only
30% of patients share the same sentiment.
To bridge this divide, the report suggests that healthcare providers must offer comprehensive explanations regarding AI, ensure transparency regarding its safety and effectiveness, clarify legal responsibilities, and reinforce data security. Patients who are more familiar with AI demand higher standards of accountability and safety, highlighting the need for improved communication.
