Texas Cardiac Arrhythmia Institute Hosts International Conference on Complex Heart Rhythm Disorders

In May 2026, the Texas Cardiac Arrhythmia Institute (TCAI) at St. David's Medical Center successfully hosted its eighth international symposium dedicated to complex heart rhythm disorders, known as EP Live 2026. The event was unprecedented in scale, attracting 1,600 participants from various corners of the globe. Notably, attendees hailed from countries including Belgium, Brazil, Canada, Colombia, and Italy, marking a significant contribution to the global dialogue on cardiac health. Out of these, 200 participants joined the event in person, eager to share knowledge and advancements in their respective fields.

The symposium was particularly aimed at healthcare professionals such as physicians, advanced practice registered nurses, and other medical personnel interested in the treatment of complex cardiac arrhythmias, a condition characterized by irregular or abnormal heart rhythms. To facilitate rich learning experiences, the conference utilized live patient case studies, expertly narrated by leading professionals from the state-of-the-art electrophysiology center at St. David's Medical Center.

Dr. Andrea Natale, a renowned cardiologist and executive medical director at TCAI, emphasized that the record number of attendees reflected a growing demand for practical education anchored in real-world case studies. "By sharing knowledge, innovations, and experiences in such collaborative settings, we are accelerating progress in cardiovascular care and improving outcomes for millions of people worldwide living with arrhythmias," she stated.

One of the key highlights of EP Live 2026 was the demonstration of new technologies and techniques adopted by TCAI physicians. Among these innovations was a more efficient approach that combined two treatments—Atrial Fibrillation (A-Fib) ablation and Left Atrial Appendage Occlusion (LAAO)—into a single procedure. This approach is particularly crucial for patients with A-Fib who face elevated stroke risks, significantly reducing the need for multiple procedures and minimizing potential complications.

The symposium also unveiled the latest advances in pulsed field ablation, a novel non-thermal ablation technique. This method supplies short bursts of high-energy electrical impulses to heart tissue to destroy the cells responsible for irregular heart rhythms without the excessive heat or cold associated with traditional procedures.

Throughout the two-day event, four sessions showcased a blend of live and recorded cases from TCAI and other prominent medical centers from around the world including Colombia's Cardioinfantil Foundation, Italy's Centro Cardiologico Monzino, and esteemed institutions such as Cleveland Clinic and Houston Methodist in the United States.

In addition to Dr. Natale, several other TCAI physicians presented at EP Live, including course co-director Dr. Amina Al-Ahmad and various notable experts like Dr. John Allison, Dr. Khaled Awada, and Dr. David Burkland. Participants had the opportunity to earn up to 14.5 hours of Category 1 continuing medical education credits through the American Medical Association's Physician Recognition Award (PRA).

The TCAI's commitment to education and innovation was evident throughout the event, as it aimed not only to inform practitioners but also to inspire the next generation of medical professionals. The insights gained from this gathering will undoubtedly contribute to better management of heart rhythm disorders, further solidifying TCAI's position as a leader in the field.
