South University in Columbia Hosts Disaster Preparedness Simulation with Public Health Agency

South University Hosts Disaster Preparedness Simulation

On April 24, 2025, South University’s Columbia campus is set to engage students in a crucial disaster preparedness simulation. This event is organized in collaboration with the South Carolina Department of Public Health (DPH) and several community partners, emphasizing the importance of real-world experience in emergency response for nursing students.

Event Details

The disaster preparedness event will kick off at 9 a.m. and continue until 4 p.m. at 9 Science Court, Columbia. It aims to immerse clinical program students in dynamic learning scenarios that closely replicate the complexities of real-life emergencies. Participants will interact with public health and safety officials through a series of hands-on activities designed to build their confidence and response skills in the face of disaster.

Interactive Learning Opportunities

During the event, students will have access to various interactive stations where they can:
  • - Collaborate with emergency response professionals in simulated disaster situations
  • - Tour a command center dedicated to disaster management
  • - Explore an evacuation bus, gaining insight into resource mobilization during emergencies
  • - Wear law enforcement protective gear to better understand the challenges faced by responders
  • - Engage in patient triage exercises to practice prioritizing care under pressure

Dr. Deborah Harris-Sims, Campus Director and Dean of Academic Affairs Operations at South University, emphasized the significance of this event: "This is an important occasion for our students to apply what they've learned in the classroom and experience firsthand what emergency preparedness looks like in the field. We're proud to work alongside DPH and our community partners to bring this training to life."

The event provides a rare opportunity for students pursuing careers in healthcare, emergency management, and public service to gain invaluable insights and skills that will translate into their future roles.

A Recurring Initiative

Last held in 2023, this simulation not only enhances the practical education of South University students but also fosters community engagement around disaster preparedness. The interactive nature of the event allows for meaningful interactions, creating a foundation for future collaboration between educational institutions and public health agencies.

As the university continues to expand its curriculum in health-related fields, this simulation reinforces its commitment to equipping students with the necessary tools to respond effectively to public health emergencies and disasters.
