10th Annual Asian World Film Festival: A Night to Remember



The 10th Asian World Film Festival (AWFF) concluded with a grand ceremony on November 21, 2024, celebrating the brilliance and diversity of Asian cinema. Held at the historic Culver Theater in Hollywood, this year’s festival was a landmark event, showcasing over 60 films, including 24 submissions for the Academy Award for Best International Feature Film. Hosted by the talented Kyrgyz director and actress Elnura Osmanalieva, alongside TV host and Golden Globe member Mico Saad, the evening was filled with accolades, heartfelt speeches, and unforgettable moments.

Main Competition Highlights



In a display of cinematic excellence, the festival bestowed its coveted Snow Leopard Awards. The highly praised "Abang Adik", directed by Jin Ong from Malaysia, was awarded Best Film, while actor Wu Kang-ren took home the accolade for Best Actor for his compelling performance in the same film. The award for Best Actress went to Diamond Bou Abboud for her role in "Arze", a moving Lebanese social dramedy directed by Mira Shaib.

Notably, the Special Jury Prize was given to the touching Iranian family drama "In the Arms of the Tree", crafted by Babak Khajeh Pasha. Additionally, the Panavision Award for Best Cinematography, accompanied by a $45,000 Panavision camera package grant, was awarded to cinematographer Zhanrbek Yeleubek for "Bauryna Salu" from Kazakhstan. This recognition was accepted by the film’s director Askhat Kuchinchirekov.

The festival also acknowledged audience favorites, with the Audience Award going to "The Glassworker", a captivating Pakistani animated feature directed by Usman Riaz.

The AWFF Lifetime Achievement Award was presented to esteemed director and producer Sergei Bodrov, best known for his cinematic works like "Mongol" and "Prisoner of the Mountains". This heartfelt tribute was delivered by Kazakhstan actress Ayanat Ksenbai. Additionally, the Outstanding Cinematic Achievement Award was awarded to renowned Hong Kong filmmaker Peter Ho-Sun Chan. The Rising Star Award, a recognition for emerging talent, was presented to the gifted Filipino actress Kathryn Bernardo, celebrated for her performances in films like "The Hows of Us".

In a special partnership with the Bruce Lee Foundation, the Bruce Lee Award was given to martial artist and actor Mark Dacascos. The festival championed martial arts cinema with this unique honor, emphasizing Bruce Lee's legacy.

The Asian Vision Best Film Award was awarded to "Night Courier" from Saudi Arabia, directed by Ali Kalthami. Additionally, "Lullaby" from the UK and Vietnam received the title of Best Short Film, further emphasizing the festival’s role in nurturing short-form storytelling.
