Gurunavi's Exceptional Craftsmanship Pavilion at MAISON & OBJET PARIS 2026

From September 10 to 14, 2026, Gurunavi, Inc. is set to present a unique experience at the MAISON & OBJET trade fair in Paris. This special event will showcase the rich tradition of Odate Magewappa, a woodworking technique perfected over a millennium. The pavilion, titled JAPAN WOOD x CRAFTSMANSHIP, aims not only to celebrate Japanese artistry but also to emphasize sustainable practices in craftsmanship suitable for modern European lifestyles.

A Historic Craft Revived

One of the highlights of this pavilion will be live demonstrations by Yoshimasa Shibata, one of the only sixteen nationally certified artisans of Odate Magewappa in Japan. This traditional technique, which has been passed down through generations for over 1,000 years, involves the intricate process of bending natural cedar wood with steam—a craft that not only represents Japanese history but also showcases the beauty of natural materials.

During the demonstrations, Shibata will exhibit two critical methods: Mage-kakou, the art of wood-bending in hot water, and Kaba-toji, where he stitches joints with wild cherry bark, mimicking fine stitching. Visitors will have a rare chance to learn about these age-old practices, which emphasize functionality, longevity, and aesthetic appeal—qualities that are becoming increasingly relevant in today’s eco-conscious market.
