Ericsson Expands DOCOMO's 5G Capacity with AIR 3255 Technology



American technology giant Ericsson has officially deployed its advanced AIR 3255 Massive MIMO (Multiple Input Multiple Output) antenna-integrated radios in NTT DOCOMO's 5G network. This launch, which kicked off in December 2025, aims to significantly enhance the network's capacity in areas that experience high traffic volumes, thereby addressing both current demands and future growth.

The AIR 3255 models specifically operate within the 4.5 GHz band, marking a strategic addition to DOCOMO's existing infrastructure. Key Features of the AIR 3255



The AIR 3255 radios are fueled by the latest Ericsson Silicon, providing 25% lower energy consumption and a 20% reduced embodied carbon footprint compared to previous models. Weighing in at approximately 13 kilograms, these units are also 20% lighter than their predecessors. Such weight improvements facilitate easier installations in high-traffic locations and amplify operational efficiency.

Additionally, the AIR 3255 radios are designed to support advanced features such as multi-user MIMO functionality. This capability allows the radios to efficiently handle multiple data streams, thereby maintaining high throughput levels even in congested network conditions. The collaborative operation with DOCOMO's existing 3.7 GHz Massive MIMO radios will also bolster spectrum efficiency, ensuring scalability as data consumption continues to grow.
