Petrokimia Gresik Unveils Ambitious Energy Transformation Plan for 2024-2030 at COP29
Petrokimia Gresik's Commitment to Energy Transformation
On November 22, 2024, Petrokimia Gresik showcased its robust energy transformation plan at the 29th COP conference held in Baku, Azerbaijan. As a prominent player within the Pupuk Indonesia group, the company is committed to addressing one of the most pressing global issues—decarbonization. Dwi Satriyo Annurogo, the President of Petrokimia Gresik, highlighted how crucial this initiative is for the company's future and the environment.
During his speech titled "Technologies, Strategies, and Best Practices for Minimizing Carbon Footprint," Dwi emphasized that Petrokimia Gresik has been intensifying its decarbonization efforts for years, aligning with Pupuk Indonesia's vision to lead in the green industry. This initiative aligns with Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto's directive to ensure national food security and achieve the target of net-zero emissions (NZE) by 2060.
Key Initiatives and Strategies
The energy transformation initiatives slated for 2024 include a significant switch in energy sources for the Phonska V plant's furnaces and burners, transitioning from coal to natural gas. The company is also expanding its electric vehicle fleet, which currently comprises 180 electric motorcycles and eight electric cars, supported by specialized charging infrastructure. This year saw the addition of two electric forklifts and one electric wheel loader to their operations, all designed to potentially reduce emissions by an impressive 22%.
Looking ahead to the 2025-2030 timeline, Petrokimia Gresik has also laid out a detailed decarbonization blueprint that includes transitioning the energy source of the Phonska IV plant from coal to natural gas, as well as switching from heating oil to gas in their sulfuric acid production processes. Moreover, they plan to engage in co-firing biomass and develop a hybrid plant for eco-friendly ammonia production and soda ash manufacturing.
Dwi reiterated that through these decarbonization efforts, the company adheres to the principles of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), while also ensuring compliance with emissions regulations. The substantial impact of these initiatives is expected, with projected emissions reductions of around 31.89% from 2025 to 2030.
Long-Term Goals
By continuing these ambitious initiatives, Petrokimia Gresik aims to drastically lower its carbon emissions to just 41,000 tons by the target year 2060, significantly below the NZE program's cap of 132,000 tons. These efforts not only illustrate the company’s commitment to sustainability but also serve as a model for other enterprises aiming to reduce their environmental footprint.
Petrokimia Gresik is poised to be a leader in Indonesia’s industrial sector, showing that significant progress can be made through dedicated efforts towards a greener future. The company's plans reflect a blend of strategic planning, technological advancement, and a firm commitment to fostering a sustainable operational model in the agricultural and industrial landscapes of Indonesia.
