Garmin Expands FAA Data Comm Solution for GTN 750Xi Series
Garmin, a leader in aviation technology, has recently announced an important expansion of its FAA Data Comm solution, making it broadly available to the retrofit market. This initiative adds over 25 different aircraft makes and models to the FAA Data Comm participation list, further enhancing communication capabilities between pilots and air traffic control.
Bringing Clear Communications to the Cockpit
Previously exclusive to integrated flight decks, Garmin's FAA Data Comm is now accessible through the GTN 750Xi series navigators. This new availability comes through the integration with the GDR 66 VHF data link (VDL) Mode 2 transceiver. By pairing the GTN 750Xi with Garmin's TXi flight displays, pilots can benefit from additional features that optimize their operational efficiency in the cockpit.
A key advancement offered by Garmin's FAA Data Comm is the enhanced push-to-load functionality. This feature allows pilots to engage in clear, text-based communications with select air traffic control facilities, thereby increasing safety and reducing the potential for miscommunications that can arise from radio transmissions. It also enables properly outfitted aircraft to directly receive and load key data, such as clearances and frequencies, directly into the avionics systems.
Enhancing Efficiency and Safety in Busy Airspaces
Garmin's FAA Data Comm solution greatly reduces the potential for errors and expedites clearance processes, which is particularly advantageous in crowded airspace. With the capability to automatically load departure route clearances into the avionics, pilots can expect quicker departures at busy airports, where every second counts.
Currently, over 60 airports are equipped with Controller Pilot Datalink Communications Departure Clearance (CPDLC-DCL), facilitating a streamlined process for departure clearances. The result is a significant decrease in workload for flight crews and an increase in safety during critical phases of flight.
Beyond departure clearances, the enroute functionality of FAA Data Comm is widely applicable. Operating above 16,000 feet MSL, all air traffic control centers in the United States are now Data Comm capable. This enables the easy transmission of complex clearances, including frequency changes and altitude adjustments, seamlessly through the GTN 750Xi series.
Seamless Integration of Features
The GTN 750Xi navigator further enhances the Data Comm experience by allowing pilots to request clearances for routing shortcuts, direct fixes for weather updates, altitude changes, and more, all via their avionics systems. This direct integration with the cockpit instruments not only simplifies processes but also keeps the entire team in sync.
Garmin emphasizes that the Data Comm enabled by the GTN 750Xi series navigators and the GDR 66 data link radio significantly elevates the operation of aircraft, especially in multi-crewed cockpits. Errors that could occur with manual entry have been greatly minimized, as altitude settings, barometric pressure, and other critical data are synchronized across multiple TXi primary flight displays.
In addition to the GTN 750Xi series, pilots can select from various configurations of TXi flight displays to optimally enhance their navigation and data communication experiences.
Subscription and Further Information
