Cannes Premiere: ANFFF 2025 Unveils 'Resonance of Nature'
An Eco-Conscious Approach to Cinema
On May 21, 2025, the Animal Nature Future Film Festival (ANFFF) made its mark at the prestigious Marche du Film during the Festival de Cannes, introducing its 2025 theme initiative titled
'Resonance of Nature - Bond of Life.' This year’s program showcased six compelling short films from the UK, US, and China that delve into the complex relations between humans, animals, and their ecosystems. By merging narrative storytelling with ecological performance and hybrid documentary techniques, this festival continues to emphasize the role of cinema as a vital tool for raising awareness regarding environmental issues and promoting cross-cultural communication.
The highlight of this year's festival is the theme film,
directed by Yangyang Shao and featuring the talented rising star,
Yulingqiao Zhang. This film emphasizes the connection between our five senses and how they engage with both the natural world and urban life. It captures the emotional and sensory experiences shared between our bodies and the environment around us. With visuals that fluctuate seamlessly between black-and-white and color, director Xiang Zhang creates a powerful montage that, accompanied by an evocative musical score from composers
Weichen Lin,
William Qi, and
Han Bao, propels viewers on an immersive sensory journey back toward nature.
A Visual Poem
Kean Cao, the producer and founder of ANFFF, describes this piece as
'a breathing visual poem'. As the centerpiece of the festival, it is designed to transcend cultural boundaries, encouraging audiences to take a moment, step away from the chaos of everyday life, and reconnect with the tranquil and dynamic energy of the natural world.
In addition to the theme film, the lineup included five more diverse films. Among them is
'Immaculate,' a documentary follows a driven scientist's mission to save the endangered spotless tree frog and received accolades including a BAFTA Student Award nomination as well as Best Young Filmmaker at ANFFF 2024.
'A Letter from a Rose' unfolds a 200-year botanical tale, a product of director
Long Jing’s intricate five-year collaboration with nature in Shanghai. Additionally,
Zhikun Zhang's 'Spring Once More' explores a father's personal growth during his wife's second labor, while the WeShort Original
'NURA' tells a gripping survival story of a woman in a climate-collapsed landscape. Lastly,
'Antigone (Modern)' by director
Uriah Jiang creatively reinterprets the Greek tragedy with members of the Stella Adler youth, serving as a critique regarding human overreach in contrast to nature.
Audience Reflections and Partnerships
Following the screening, audience members expressed their thoughts and insights. Viewer
Paolo remarked on the enriching cross-cultural perspectives presented by the films. Similarly, Georgia found herself deeply aligned with ANFFF's mission, feeling moved by the real-world ecological narratives that aim to safeguard endangered species. She expressed her desire to share these vital stories in her own homeland.
Strengthening its mission,
Alex Loprieno, CEO of WeShort, formalized a long-term collaboration with ANFFF at the event. This strategic partnership revolves around fostering global advancements in ecological cinema. Collectively, they aim to enhance the market presence and international distribution of films centered on vital ecological themes, empowering filmmakers to engage audiences in urgent discussions surrounding environmental matters.
Building upon this vision, ANFFF welcomes curators from across the globe to join their platform. By tapping into localized screenings and driving community engagement, they aspire to magnify awareness regarding ecological and animal protection, aiming to tell meaningful stories that resonate with diverse audiences in each region.
