The 2025 International Congress of Basic Science Kicks Off in Beijing



On July 13, 2025, the prestigious 2025 International Congress of Basic Science (ICBS) was officially inaugurated at the China National Convention Center in Beijing. This momentous event has gathered some of the brightest minds in science from around the globe over a two-week period dedicated to foundational research.

Notably, the congress is graced by the presence of four Fields Medal laureates, three Nobel Prize winners, and two Turing Award recipients, including renowned figures like Shing-Tung Yau and Andrew Chi-Chih Yao. Alongside these esteemed scientists, more than 80 academics and nearly 1,000 researchers from leading institutions worldwide are participating in this landmark conference.

During the opening ceremony, Li Luming, the President of Tsinghua University, warmly welcomed the global scientific community. He highlighted that ICBS has evolved into a premier platform for researchers to engage in dialogue and foster collaboration. President Li reaffirmed Tsinghua University's dedication to supporting groundbreaking research initiatives led by Professor Shing-Tung Yau and emphasized their ongoing partnerships with scientists from various nations. This collaboration aims to strengthen foundational science, promote technological innovations, and drive socioeconomic development for a better future for humanity.

Shing-Tung Yau, who presides over the ICBS and is a recipient of the Fields Medal, shared insights on recent advancements in mathematics, physics, and information science. He believes that we are entering a new era fueled by theoretical breakthroughs and technological advancements.

This year, six outstanding scientists including Samuel C.C. Ting, Steven Chu, David Gross, Robert Tarjan, Shigefumi Mori, and George Lusztig received the 2025 Basic Science Lifetime Award, which recognizes exceptional contributions to basic science.

Additionally, the congress presented 118 Frontiers of Science Awards (FSA) to recipients across over 20 countries in the fields of mathematics, physics, and computer science. Noteworthy recipients included both OpenAI and the FAIR team from Meta, reflecting the integration of AI advancements in scientific exploration.

Founded by Shing-Tung Yau in 2023, the ICBS occurs annually under the theme “Advancing Science for Humanity.” During this year’s congress, nearly 1,000 scientists and students, including over 400 leading scholars, are gathering at the Beijing Institute of Mathematical Sciences and Applications. More than 500 sessions will explore topics related to mathematics, physics, computer science, and engineering, focusing on cutting-edge AI research, interdisciplinary innovation, and groundbreaking theoretical developments.

Besides academic dialogues, the ICBS also emphasizes youth engagement, featuring various activities, including Tsinghua Day on July 19. This underscores the congress’s commitment to fostering the next generation of scientists and researchers.

The ICBS 2025 plays a pivotal role in promoting international cooperation and academic exchange as part of the global scientific advancement journey. “Science thrives on collaboration,” said Yau. “Here marks the beginning of the next era of discoveries.”

This congress not only champions scientific advancements but also serves as a significant step towards collaboration that transcends borders, aiming to address the complex challenges facing humanity today.
