James Dyson Award 2026 Opens for Innovative Solutions from Young Designers

A Call to Action for Young Innovators: The James Dyson Award 2026

The James Dyson Award, one of the foremost design engineering competitions worldwide, has officially opened its doors for submissions for the 2026 cycle. This initiative encourages current students and recent graduates in design and engineering to bring forth innovative ideas aimed at addressing real-world challenges. With participation available across 28 countries and regions, the award serves as a platform for the next generation of creators to showcase their talents.

What is the James Dyson Award?

Founded by the renowned inventor Sir James Dyson, the award aims to inspire young innovators who wish to tackle pressing issues by providing a stage for their ideas. Over 400 inventions have benefitted from this initiative since its inception, receiving financial support, exposure, and guidance from established professionals in the field. Winning submissions not only have the chance to win significant funding but also gain momentum necessary for commercialization.

The Submission Journey

Entrants are welcome to submit their designs on the official James Dyson Award website. The deadline for entries is set for midnight on July 15, 2026, making this a perfect opportunity for budding engineers to think creatively and submit their projects. Eligible candidates include university students and recent graduates pursuing design and engineering disciplines.

Evaluation and Prizes

Once submissions close, a national judging panel composed of design and engineering experts, including professionals from Dyson, will evaluate the innovations. National winners will earn a prize of $6,500 and the opportunity to compete on an international stage. From these entries, Sir James Dyson will select global winners who are awarded an impressive $40,000, coupled with resources to further develop their ideas and bring their inventions to a broader audience.

Last Year’s Highlights

In its 20th year in 2025, the James Dyson Award saw a remarkable response, with over 2,100 submissions from young engineers around the globe. Projects spanned various fields, addressing issues like health screening, disaster relief, and household waste management.

A notable U.S. National prize winner was Sole, a wearable robotic device designed to assist individuals with foot drop. Created by students from Harvard University and U.S. Army veterans Bradley Wagman and Viktor Bokisch, this innovative device replaces traditional mobility aids, addressing challenges in comfort and usability.

Bradley noted, “Winning the James Dyson Award validates our efforts and draws us closer to our vision of creating assistive devices that individuals are proud to wear.” Similarly, Viktor remarked, “This recognition proves that what we’ve built isn’t only feasible but also essential.”

The global sustainability category drew significant attention with the awarding of WaterSense, an autonomous water quality monitoring device created by Filip Budny from Poland. This groundbreaking innovation employs real-time, AI-powered monitoring to alert users of pollution, thereby transforming environmental assessment and intervention methods.

A Platform for Change

As part of its mission, the James Dyson Award is not just about recognition; it's about propelling these young inventors towards commercial success. Sir James Dyson himself emphasizes the importance of supporting those who pragmatically seek solutions to the world's issues rather than merely voicing concerns.

Engaging in this competition allows young creators to gain recognition, develop partnerships, and access resources that can help materialize their ideas into tangible solutions. Sir James remarked, “It is inspiring to witness these brilliant ideas which push the boundaries of design and engineering.”
