How the Alzheimer's Association Elevates Awareness with 'Unforgettable' Film Release

Alzheimer's Association's Impactful Transition from Stage to Film

Following a successful tour across the nation, the Alzheimer’s Association has partnered with Gdavis Productions and Films, LLC to adapt the powerful stage play "Unforgettable" into a film format. This pivotal move aims to broaden the reach of its poignant narrative, highlighting the realities of Alzheimer's disease and related dementias.

Since its inception in 2022, the original stage production engaged audiences through impactful storytelling that resonated culturally, shining a light on critical topics such as the early signs of Alzheimer's, caregiving struggles, the related stigma, and the importance of participating in clinical trials. By following a family navigating the challenges of dementia, the play has prompted vital discussions around brain health and the urgent need to tackle health disparities in communities disproportionately affected by the disease.

Carl V. Hill, Ph.D., MPH, the chief diversity, equity, and inclusion officer at the Alzheimer’s Association, emphasizes the significance of this narrative. He notes, "The success of 'Unforgettable' demonstrates the power of storytelling and the arts to build trust, increase understanding, and encourage action around Alzheimer’s and other dementia. Transitioning from stage to film allows us to extend that impact and bring these important conversations to more people nationwide."

Expanding Impact Through Film

The Alzheimer's Association has ambitious goals for the film adaptation of "Unforgettable." By making the story accessible in schools, community centers, and homes, they aim to foster deeper connections and discussions on topics surrounding Alzheimer's. Alzheimer’s Association chapters will host both in-person and virtual screenings designed to:
  • - Increase awareness of Alzheimer’s and related conditions.
  • - Educate audiences about brain health and the importance of early diagnosis.
  • - Encourage participation in clinical trials, particularly among populations often left out of conversations about health and research.
  • - Foster a supportive community dialogue.

Garrett Davis, the award-winning filmmaker and creator of the original stage play, remarks on the film's potential to carry forward the message: "This format allows the story to live on, reaching new audiences and continuing to inspire dialogue, education, and hope for families affected by Alzheimer’s disease."

Proven Impact Backed by Research

A recent study published in "Alzheimer's & Dementia: Translational Research & Clinical Interventions" evaluated the effectiveness of the stage production, revealing strong audience engagement and satisfaction with nearly 90% of attendees recommending it to others. Participants reported heightened awareness of dementia warning signs, available resources, and the importance of diverse participation in clinical trials.

The study highlighted persistent barriers to research involvement, including fears and misinformation, underscoring the necessity for culturally tailored educational approaches. These findings advocate for arts-based narrations as a powerful strategy for dismantling stigma and enhancing awareness.

Organizations and communities interested in hosting a screening can access the film’s trailer and request to showcase it, ensuring the continuation of these critical conversations.
