Analysis Reveals 97 Forklift-Related Fatalities in 2024 Across the U.S.

Forklift Accidents Lead to 97 Tragic Fatalities in 2024

In a recent analysis conducted by Intella Parts, a thorough examination of Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) accident records has uncovered a grave statistic: 97 workplace deaths related to forklifts were reported in 2024. This alarming figure underscores the persistent threats facing workers across a broad spectrum of industries in the United States. The incidents transpired in 36 different states and territories, with Texas bearing the highest burden, accounting for 15 of these tragic fatalities, more than any other state.

The Disturbing Data

Following Texas, Georgia reported seven forklift-related deaths, while California had six. North Carolina and Ohio each saw five fatalities. New York and South Carolina recorded four each, and several other states, including Florida, Louisiana, and Massachusetts, reported three. The detailed incidents spanned across the nation, highlighting a significant level of risk not limited to any specific geographical area. The findings reveal that forklift hazards do not solely involve the operators; many victims included pedestrians, maintenance workers, and other personnel in proximity to active forklift operations.

“Forklift dangers extend beyond the operator's seat,” stated Marcel VandenTop, President of Intella Parts. “These statistics illustrate that pedestrians, maintenance personnel, and workers engaged in material handling are equally at risk.” Addressing these tragedies requires adopting a comprehensive strategy toward workplace safety.

Leading Causes of Fatalities

Among the analyzed fatalities, the leading causes were striking incidents or collisions with forklifts, resulting in 23 deaths. Additionally, 22 fatalities were attributed to individuals being caught, crushed, or pinned by moving parts. Falling loads or materials were responsible for 20 more deaths. Other significant categories included forklift overturns and falls from elevation, each contributing to 14 of the tragic incidents. Notably, electrical contact-like electrocution caused three deaths.

The findings reaffirm that forklift safety practices cannot solely focus on traffic management. Issues related to overturns, working at heights, unstable load conditions, and electrical hazards continually pose significant threats to workers.

Additional Risks During Maintenance

The analysis highlighted that 21 fatalities occurred during various maintenance-related tasks, such as repairs, inspections, and loading preparations. This starkly emphasizes the critical necessity for ensuring that equipment is properly secured, stored energy is controlled, and potential movement of equipment is halted before proceeding with maintenance tasks. Safety protocols during these operations must be prioritized to prevent further casualties.

Recommendations for Improved Safety

Intella Parts urges employers to take several proactive measures to enhance safety in the workplace. According to their recommendations, it is crucial to:
1. Separate pedestrian paths from forklift traffic to minimize accidents.
2. Establish exclusion zones around areas with moving equipment and elevated loads.
3. Always verify the stability of loads transported by forklifts.
4. Enforce safety measures like seat belt usage among operators.
5. Regularly assess travel routes for slopes, edges, and obstructions that could lead to accidents.

Furthermore, the implementation of safety devices such as warning lights and audible alarms is advised as part of a broader safety initiative. These safety devices should work in tandem with tailored training programs and standard operating procedures. Employers should proactively investigate near misses to address potential risks before more severe accidents occur.

“While operator training is vital, it only addresses one aspect of safety,” VandenTop remarked. “Employers must also prioritize protection for mechanics, contractors, pedestrians, and anyone else working alongside forklifts.” This holistic approach aims to create safer environments for workers universally.
