Maryhill Winery Celebrated as 'Winery of the Year' at Dan Berger's International Wine Competition

Maryhill Winery: A Triumph in Winemaking



Maryhill Winery, renowned for its dedication to quality and craftsmanship, has recently been honored with the prestigious title of Winery of the Year at the 2025 Dan Berger's International Wine Competition (DBIWC). This remarkable achievement highlights the winery's commitment to producing exceptional wines and solidifies its reputation within the wine industry.

Located in the stunning Columbia River Gorge, Maryhill Winery was founded 25 years ago by owners Craig and Vicki Leuthold. Over the years, under the meticulous guidance of winemaker Richard Batchelor, the winery has garnered numerous accolades, including an impressive total of 75 medals from this competition alone. Among these, 14 were gold or triple gold, reflecting the winery’s consistent excellence in winemaking.

At the recent competition held at the Sonoma County Fairgrounds on December 11, 2025, Maryhill Winery received the esteemed David Stevens Memorial Trophy. This award not only commemorates its status as Winery of the Year but also pays tribute to a beloved figure in California’s winemaking community.

In addition to Maryhill’s recognition, the event showcased the talents of other exceptional wineries. The Small Winery of the Year award was presented to Pennyroyal Farm, located in Anderson Valley, Mendocino. This winery impressed judges by earning medals for all 11 wines submitted, which included three triple gold medals and eight silvers, crafted under the skillful hand of winemaker Sarah Cahn Bennett.

Additionally, the DBIWC Terroir Award, which honors the best use of subregional grapes, went to Jeff Runquist Wines. With an astonishing collection of 36 awards out of 37 entries, Runquist has established himself as one of the state’s finest winemakers, having already won this title six times in the past eight years.

Barefoot's Gallo brand triumphed as the Value Winery of the Year once again, with 36 awards achieved for wines, nearly all priced under $10. This reflects Gallo's commitment to providing quality wines at an accessible price point.

The competition also featured an array of Best of Show awards across various categories. The sparkling wine that took home the title was the 2022 Pennyroyal Blanc de Blanc, priced at $45, while the 2024 Rodney Strong Rosé of Pinot Noir ($25) and **2023 Jeff Runquist
