Lumine Corporation Implements Offsite Corporate PPA for Hydroelectric Power Supply

Lumine Corporation's Commitment to Clean Energy

Lumine Corporation, headquartered in Shibuya, Tokyo, is taking significant steps towards sustainability with its initiative titled "WE ILLUMINATE THE FUTURE: The choices we make every day shape our future." Starting from the fiscal year 2024, Lumine will transition its 17 facilities, including its headquarters, to 100% clean energy. This initiative is part of a broader effort to promote positive changes for the environment and society.

Introduction of Offsite Hydropower Corporate PPA

As part of its clean energy strategy, Lumine has decided to incorporate an offsite corporate Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) powered by hydroelectric energy. This decision underscores Lumine's commitment to a carbon-neutral future, furthering its efforts towards decarbonization.

Hydropower is recognized for its ability to provide a stable supply of electricity regardless of natural conditions, alongside a long lifespan for power generation facilities. The selected power supply will come from the Mizusawa Power Plant, which is set to complete a repowering project in November 2024. This repowering will enhance the efficiency of power generation, making it an optimal source for Lumine's energy needs.

Energy Transformation

By utilizing hydroelectric power for part of the energy consumption at its flagship stores, Lumine Shinjuku Lumine 1 and Lumine 2, the company aims to accelerate its transition to clean energy. The move aligns with Lumine's previous efforts towards carbon neutrality, which includes utilizing the environmental values of renewable energy credits and food waste-based energy sources.

Lumine's commitment extends back over 20 years, with initiatives such as rooftop greening, the introduction of Building Energy Management Systems (BEMS), and continuous upgrades to LED and high-efficiency equipment aimed at energy conservation. The ongoing endeavors in carbon neutrality have allowed Lumine to obtain a projected total reduction of approximately 38,000 tons of CO2 by 2025.

Past Achievements and Future Goals

In 2021, Lumine initiated its journey towards clean energy with the transition of its Machida store's electricity supply to clean energy, and since then has progressively expanded these efforts. The company also began implementing carbon offset urban gas systems and has since incorporated this approach into several of its locations.

By 2024, Lumine expects that approximately 80% of its total energy usage will come from clean energy, effectively reducing CO2 emissions by about 30,000 tons. The introduction of the hydroelectric corporate PPA will further this transformation, enhancing their energy portfolio.

Looking ahead, Lumine aims to continue its collaboration with various partners to foster positive change for both the environment and society, cementing its role as a leader in sustainability in the retail sector.

Conclusion

As Lumine embarks on this ambitious journey towards complete clean energy adoption across all its facilities by 2024, its hydroelectric PPA implementation represents a pivotal moment in the company’s sustainability practices. With a commitment to positively impacting both the environment and community, Lumine sets a notable precedent in corporate responsibility and the pursuit of a greener future.
