Comprehensive Decarbonization in Housing: A New Era Begins
In a landmark collaboration, Octopus Energy has partnered with Tact Home to spearhead efforts toward comprehensive decarbonization in the housing sector in Japan. This partnership comes as Octopus Energy has recently achieved a remarkable growth rate of 63% in 2024, ranking first among the top 30 electricity providers in the country. Together, these companies are leadings the charge for greener practices from the construction stage of homes all the way through to post-residence living.
The Driving Force Behind Decarbonization
As the demand for increased environmental performance in residential buildings rises, particularly in response to initiatives such as Japan's 'Housing Top Runner System,' Tact Home is committed to elevating energy efficiency through innovative sustainable solutions. The collaboration aims to not only enhance the use of renewable energy but also to accelerate the decarbonization of the housing sector by implementing initiatives that span the entire lifecycle of residential properties.
The partnership is focused on two key offerings:
1.
Nationwide Deployment of Non-Fossil Temporary Power Sources: This will address the need for construction-stage electricity without contributing to carbon emissions.
2.
Zero-Upfront Solar Energy Services: Tact Home will provide a groundbreaking solar power solution that allows homeowners to integrate solar technology without any initial financial burden, further facilitating the switch to renewable energy.
Revolutionizing Construction with Sustainable Energy
Traditionally, decarbonization efforts in housing were primarily centered around energy consumption after residents moved in. However, the construction phase—the period when substantial energy is consumed—has often been overlooked. By transitioning to non-fossil energy sources for temporary power, this partnership is poised to significantly minimize the environmental impact of the construction process itself. Furthermore, the streamlining of power contracts and billing procedures will enhance operational efficiency for Tact Home, leading to both decarbonization and improved management of greenhouse gas emissions.
Making Solar Power Accessible
One of the standout features of this collaboration is the introduction of a solar power service that requires no initial payment. This initiative lowers the barriers to adopting renewable energy through a pay-as-you-go model, thereby broadening access to sustainable energy. Such an approach not only boosts the environmental performance of homes but also decreases electricity costs for residents over time. In fact, solar installation rates are crucial metrics for Tact Home, as they align with the targets set under the Housing Top Runner System, with standards for new homes set at 37.5% for built-for-sale properties and 87.5% for custom builds.
Nationwide Expansion and Environmental Impact
As of April 2026, Tact Home has successfully incorporated solar power into approximately 1,200 homes, with a total capacity of 6,398kW. The company expects to expand this effort significantly, projecting to supply around 5,000 new homes nationwide, with about 1,000 of those likely to feature solar power systems in areas outside Tokyo and Kansai starting from October 2026. Such initiatives are expected to contribute significantly to reducing CO₂ emissions across the entire lifecycle of housing. Furthermore, this progressive strategy aligns with the ongoing trend of increasing solar energy adoption, positioning it as a prominent initiative for nationwide environmental reform.
A Commitment to Sustainable Living
Tact Home has long been committed to sustainability through its residential projects. With Octopus Energy’s support for renewable energy implementation, including into construction and energy usage after occupancy, this partnership aims to facilitate decarbonization across the entire lifecycle of homes—construction, supply, and utilization. Together, they endeavor to contribute to the development of a sustainable society by advancing these transformative practices in housing.
