Wilson Language Training Expands Literacy Program for Grades K-5 to Combat Declining Reading Skills
Wilson Language Training Expands Literacy Solutions
In a significant move to address the literacy challenges faced by students, Wilson Language Training has launched an expanded version of its widely adopted Fundations® K–3 program, now covering grades 4 and 5. This initiative, named Fundations® K–5, aims to support the growing number of students struggling with literacy, especially in the wake of declining state and national reading scores.
The Importance of Structured Literacy
Structured Literacy is widely recognized as an effective educational approach that aligns closely with the Science of Reading. It emphasizes systematic instruction that is cumulative and explicit—ensuring that all students gain mastery in their reading skills. The introduction of Fundations® K–5 directly addresses a critical gap in literacy education, particularly for those students transitioning from elementary to more complex texts.
With many literacy programs ending at the third grade, students often find themselves without adequate resources as they progress through grades 4 and 5. Wilson's new program not only prolongs access to proven literacy instruction, but it also introduces advanced skills crucial for academic success at higher educational levels.
New Features of Fundations® K–5
One of the standout elements of Fundations® K–5 is its Sentence Sense feature, which has been developed by Dr. Bonnie Singer. This feature focuses on enhancing students' sentence comprehension—a vital component in developing reading proficiency.
