Iris Ohyama and Tokyo Collaborate for Disaster Preparedness
Iris Ohyama Inc., headquartered in Sendai, Miyagi Prefecture, has entered into an important agreement with Tokyo as of June 11, 2026. This latest pact, known as the “Agreement on Support for Procurement of Supplies in Times of Disaster,” aims to strengthen disaster response capabilities in a region that faces increasing risks from significant seismic events and climate change-induced disasters.
As Tokyo is a densely populated area with a high concentration of industries, the potential for widespread disruptions during a disaster is considerable. An earthquake or severe weather event could lead to a surge in stranded individuals and evacuees, alongside significant risks to crucial infrastructure and supply chains. In addressing this pressing challenge, ensuring rapid and stable supply of essential goods to disaster-affected populations is imperative.
Iris Ohyama has a history of working collaboratively with local municipalities where its factories and offices are situated, concluding comprehensive partnership and disaster-related agreements to fortify disaster prevention and mitigation efforts. The company has established a robust supply system capable of rapidly distributing resources from 20 domestic factories. Notably, following the Noto Peninsula earthquake that struck on January 1, 2024, Iris Ohyama acted quickly, delivering supplies to affected areas within just a couple of days after the event.
This new agreement enhances the existing collaboration with Tokyo, allowing for swift procurement support based on the city’s requests during disasters. Additionally, Iris Ohyama plans to leverage the insights gained from experiences during the Great East Japan Earthquake to promote disaster awareness initiatives and develop disaster prevention products tailored for urban resilience.
As a manufacturer responsible for supplying disaster supplies, everyday goods, and food, Iris Ohyama aims to contribute to improving Tokyo's disaster preparedness through a blend of technological innovation and strategic partnerships, ensuring safety and peace of mind for the city's residents.
