SFA Therapeutics: New Executive Changes as It Readies for SFA-002D Commercialization

SFA Therapeutics Announces Key Executive Changes

SFA Therapeutics, Inc., a clinical-stage biopharmaceutical company, has made notable executive organizational changes as it gears up for the commercialization of SFA-002D, a drug showing promising outcomes in treating psoriasis. Having successfully completed their phase 1b clinical trial, the company is setting the stage for further advancements.

Leadership Shifts

Following these impressive results, the Board of Directors appointed Shawn Patrick O'Brien, previously the Chairman, as the new CEO. O'Brien brings with him a wealth of experience, having directed the commercialization efforts of various small and large molecules, including ten blockbuster drugs at AstraZeneca and the successful transitions of several biotech firms. Under his leadership with Mayne Pharmaceuticals, he achieved a significant turnaround, demonstrating his capability to drive organizational success.

"After 4 ½ years as Chairman, I am excited to add the additional responsibilities as the CEO of SFA Therapeutics as we head into Phase 2 for Psoriasis and Phase 1 for pancreatic cancer," said O'Brien. He highlights the exciting opportunities ahead, citing the unique data produced by the team under Ira Spector’s guidance.

Dr. Ira C. Spector, a co-founder and the previous CEO, will take on the role of Chief Strategy Officer. His legacy includes developing nine drugs and overseeing 19 patents during his tenure. He now aims to support the company’s strategic direction in immunology and pancreatic cancer treatment development.

Continued Innovation

Dr. Mark Feitelson, another co-founder, transitions to Head of Discovery Research while remaining responsible for ongoing laboratory and discovery initiatives. His previous research at Temple University forms the bedrock of the original drug pipeline, and he continues to lead innovative target discovery.

In a similar turn, Dr. Alla Arzumanyan, formerly the Chief Development Officer, steps into the role of Chief Scientific Officer, marking a strategic shift towards commercialization within the pipeline of drugs. Arzumanyan has played a critical role in the developmental processes that have allowed SFA to advance drugs for human use.

James Kirwin, MBA, will keep overseeing operations as COO and Head of Clinical Operations, having guided SFA through its phase 1b clinical trial and managing clinical development projects for SFA-002D and SFA-009.

The Future of SFA Therapeutics

The organizational realignment represents SFA Therapeutics' commitment to innovation and clinical excellence as they advance their pipeline targeting not only psoriasis but other significant autoimmune diseases. The company’s research is not merely an experiment; it is tangible proof of concept for future treatments against a variety of autoimmune conditions and cancers.

SFA Therapeutics aims to leverage its impressive patent portfolio of 19 issued and over 30 pending, establishing a powerful foothold in the market for oral therapeutics directed at inflammatory diseases and cancer.

As SFA utilizes its strong foundation and profound scientific knowledge to drive innovation, it remains focused on fulfilling the needs of patients globally. Their ongoing commitment to refining and advancing their therapeutic options bodes well for the future of autoimmune disease treatment.
