Pillar Biosciences and Partners Launch Liquid Biopsy Initiative for Lung Cancer Screening
Pillar Biosciences Collaborates for Lung Cancer Liquid Biopsy Screening
In a groundbreaking initiative, Pillar Biosciences, Inc., along with LC-SCRUM-Asia and LSI Medience Corporation, has announced a collaboration aimed at enhancing the screening process for lung cancer patients through liquid biopsy technology. This partnership is part of the comprehensive LC-SCRUM-Asia project based in Japan and represents a significant step forward in precision oncology.
Project Overview
The collaborative effort focuses on utilizing Pillar's oncoReveal® Essential+ assay, which has already been validated for screening circulating cell-free DNA (cfDNA) and cell-free RNA (cfRNA) from blood samples of lung cancer patients. The testing is set to commence in August 2026, with plans to enroll roughly 2,000 patients over a two-year span. This initiative will aid in identifying genomic alterations that play a crucial role in developing targeted therapies for lung cancer.
Daniel Harma, Chief Commercial Officer of Pillar Biosciences, emphasized the importance of this collaboration: "LC-SCRUM-Asia has established an important collaborative framework for advancing precision oncology research in lung cancer. We are thrilled that our oncoReveal® Essential+ has been validated for this project, paving the way for broader access to innovative cancer diagnostics."
Significance of Liquid Biopsy
Liquid biopsy techniques offer a less invasive alternative to traditional biopsies, allowing for genomic analysis from blood samples when obtaining tissue is challenging or requires more invasive procedures. By analyzing both cfDNA and cfRNA, the LC-SCRUM-Asia project aims to broaden the scope of genomic screening in patients with lung cancer, thereby enhancing clinical research on this challenging disease.
Dr. Koichi Goto from LC-SCRUM-Asia stated, "Rapid and reliable genomic testing is essential for identifying patients who may benefit from biomarker-driven clinical studies and emerging precision therapies. The incorporation of oncoReveal® Essential+ will provide our network with an effective and accessible solution for analyzing cfDNA and cfRNA from lung cancer patients, meeting the urgent demands of clinical research."
About LC-SCRUM-Asia
Led by the National Cancer Center Hospital East in Japan, LC-SCRUM-Asia is a vast lung cancer genomic screening and clinical research network. The project brings together a diverse group of stakeholders, including healthcare institutions, diagnostic labs, pharmaceutical companies, and research entities. Together, they aim to identify genomic alterations in lung cancer patients and facilitate the development of biomarker-driven therapies through enhanced molecular screening and collaboration.
LSI Medience's Role
LSI Medience Corporation, a main player in this partnership, is a clinical testing company established in Japan in 1975. It focuses on developing innovative solutions across various testing fields, contributing to disease prevention, early detection, diagnosis, and treatment. The company plans to leverage its analytical expertise to support the project's research objectives.
