Celebrating Cypriot Heritage Through History of Fashion in Nicosia
Celebrating Cypriot Heritage Through Fashion
On October 18, a significant street in Nicosia turned into an exhilarating outdoor fashion show, marking a vibrant celebration of Cypriot heritage. This immersive event, termed Here Come the Cypriots, was organized by BE OPEN and the Center of Visual Arts and Research (CVAR). It intricately wove together the historical timeline of the island through unique garments and the daily lives of its inhabitants, showcasing how fashion reflects cultural narratives.
The event displayed an array of clothing that represented different periods, from the Ottoman era through the British colonial period to modern times. Local school adolescents elegantly donned historical attire, engaging the contemporary audience with centuries of evolving fashion.
Dr. Rita C. Severis, Director of CVAR, emphasized the multicultural essence of Cyprus, a blend of societies and historical events that resonate not only within the people but also in numerous aspects of daily life, including culinary traditions, language, and attire. She stated, "It is this last element that we are celebrating in collaboration with BE OPEN, with hopes that this experience deepens understanding and revives cherished memories."
Elena Baturina, founder of BE OPEN, expressed her admiration for Cyprus's artistic and craftsmanship heritage, which served as inspiration for this cultural event. "It was a pleasure to be part of this vibrant journey alongside CVAR. As an international initiative, BE OPEN proudly supports meaningful celebrations that reflect Cyprus's unique culture and history, and we will continue to foster projects that benefit the island’s emerging creative community."
In a statement from the Ministry of Culture of Cyprus, Permanent Secretary Emmanuella Lambrianidou acknowledged that state cultural policies thrive on active civil participation, expressing her heartfelt gratitude to both CVAR and BE OPEN for their unwavering commitment to promoting Cypriot culture.
Additionally, to further support artistic traditions, BE OPEN, in collaboration with the Cultural Ministry's Craft Service, has launched the Cyprus Future Heritage competition. This initiative invites young artisans, artists, and designers to reimagine Cypriot weaving and embroidery traditions. The three winners will receive comprehensive internships and workshops abroad, facilitated by BE OPEN.
The fusion of fashion, art, and cultural heritage at this extraordinary event serves not only as a celebration but also as a reminder of the stories woven into the fabric of Cyprus itself. The enthusiastic participation from the youth reflects a promising future for Cypriot arts and a renewed appreciation for its rich heritage.
