CellFiber Launches Philadelphia Subsidiary to Enhance US Production of Advanced Cell Therapies

CellFiber Launches US Subsidiary in Philadelphia

In a significant move for the biotechnology sector, CellFiber Co., Ltd., a Tokyo-based company, has established its first international subsidiary, CellFiber, Inc., in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. This new facility, located at the Collaborative Innovation Center (CIC) Philadelphia, officially opened on October 1, 2026. It aims to facilitate the manufacturing of advanced therapies in the rapidly evolving field of cell therapy and regenerative medicine.

CellFiber specializes in 3D cell culture and bioprocessing technology, which is crucial for the production of cell-based therapies such as induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSC), mesenchymal stromal cells (MSC), and CAR-T cell therapies. With the global demand for cell and gene therapies on the rise, the Philadelphia subsidiary is poised to enhance the accessibility and scalability of these treatments, which have historically been hampered by complex manufacturing processes and high costs.

Addressing Manufacturing Challenges

The challenges associated with the production of these innovative therapies cannot be overstated. High-quality cell manufacturing must comply with stringent Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) guidelines, yet only a limited number of facilities have managed to meet these requirements effectively. CellFiber's proprietary technology aims to bridge this gap by providing solutions that facilitate closed, large-scale manufacturing of cell-based therapies.

To set the stage for its US entry, CellFiber unveiled the Zeito™ Plus System in December 2025. This GMP-compatible system enhances the production of cell fibers and is integral to CellFiber's strategy for expanding its market presence. With the new Philadelphia location, the company aims to solidify its partnerships with US pharmaceutical and biotechnology firms, as well as contract development and manufacturing organizations (CDMOs).

Strategic Location and Future Plans

CellFiber intends for the Philadelphia facility to act as a central hub, enabling collaboration with local biopharma companies and research institutions engaged in developing cell and gene therapies. This region, often referred to as 'Cellicon Valley', boasts a robust ecosystem of cell therapy innovation, attracting significant investment and fostering research initiatives.

Kazuchika Furuishi, President and CEO of CellFiber, remarked on the strategic importance of Philadelphia, stating, "This city has been pivotal in the development of the world’s first CAR-T cell therapy and hosts leading institutions in this field. Establishing an office here allows us to collaborate directly with development teams, enhancing our capacity to support innovative research and process development."

CellFiber's approach is centered around its CellFiber® technology, which involves an encapsulation method using alginate hydrogel. This technology protects and supports cell growth, ensuring that cells maintain their functionality and quality over an extended period. It is designed for various therapeutic cells, including iPSCs, MSCs, T cells, and more, positioning CellFiber as a forward-thinking entity in regenerative medicine.

Commitment to Regenerative Medicine

With the growing need for scalable cell manufacturing solutions, CellFiber’s mission to “connect cells to patients” is increasingly relevant. The company is dedicated to enhancing the quality of life for patients through efficient development and production of cutting-edge cell and gene therapies.

As CellFiber's US subsidiary begins operations, the company is optimistic about the opportunities ahead. The Philadelphia site not only marks a key milestone in the company’s growth trajectory but also represents a commitment to advancing regenerative medicine, ultimately leading to better patient outcomes across the globe.

This expansion into the United States is just the beginning for CellFiber as it seeks to make significant contributions to the biotechnology landscape, ensuring that innovative therapies are available to those who need them most.
