India's Mental Health Alliance Advocates for Lived Experience in Care Design and Policy

The Importance of Lived Experience in Mental Healthcare

On World Mental Health Day, celebrated on October 10, the India Mental Health Alliance (IMHA) highlighted the significance of lived experiences in enhancing mental healthcare services and policies. As a collaborative network composed of 400 organizations across 30 Indian states, IMHA is dedicated to transforming how mental health care is approached in India by placing the voices of those who have faced mental health challenges at the forefront.

Emphasizing Collective Responsibility

IMHA was founded on the premise that addressing mental health is a communal priority that requires shared commitment. Over the past two years, the organization has engaged with over 3,380 mental health professionals in more than 135 cities throughout India. This outreach aims to foster collaboration among its member organizations, enabling knowledge-sharing, skill enhancement, and the incorporation of lived experience in mental health care.

Dr. Kavita Arora, a Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist and a key member of IMHA, stated, "The insights gained from lived experiences are invaluable. They reveal how individuals navigate mental health services and seek support within their unique cultural and social contexts." This perspective underscores the necessity of combining clinical expertise with the realities faced by individuals who have lived through mental health issues. Such integration is crucial for cultivating a mental health ecosystem that is both equitable and responsive.

Building a Knowledge Hub

In line with their mission to amplify the role of lived experience, IMHA is developing a collaborative Knowledge Hub. This platform aims to make varied forms of knowledge—such as practitioner insights, academic research, and lived experience narratives—accessible to all stakeholders involved in mental health.

A prime example of this initiative is the recent publication of India’s first anthology of lived experience accounts, titled Homecoming: Mental Health Journeys of Resilience, Healing, and Wholeness. The collection features narratives from 11 women leaders who candidly share their struggles with severe mental health issues, including depression, complex PTSD, trauma from suicide loss, anxiety, and OCD. These poignant stories not only shed light on individual journeys but also encourage a broader discussion on how families, communities, and healthcare systems can better support individuals facing such challenges.

Collaborative Efforts for a Better Future

IMHA recognizes that building a robust mental health support system involves collective action. The organization focuses on training community organizations, healthcare professionals, and educational institutions to ensure everyone is equipped with up-to-date knowledge and practices that reflect the realities of individuals living with mental health challenges.

By promoting mental health as a key developmental focus for the nation, IMHA strives to improve the overall quality of mental health care in India. Their vision encompasses embedding Lived Experience Expertise (LEE) into care practices, thereby mobilizing sustainable resources for mental health initiatives across the country.

In conclusion, IMHA's initiatives illustrate a transformative approach that places lived experience at the core of mental health care. As India continues to evolve in its understanding of mental health, incorporating diverse perspectives will be critical in shaping effective, empathetic, and inclusive mental health services for all.
